Women’s Heart Disease Risks/Symptoms

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the broad term encompassing all disorders of the heart and circulatory system. These include coronary heart disease (CHD), angina, stroke, congenital heart disease, and heart attack (myocardial infarction or MI). It is well-known that in the USA, CVD is the leading killer of men. What is not so well-known is that CVD is the leading killer of women aged 50 and older. It is also not common knowledge that there are substantial gender differences in not only the prevalence of these diseases, but also in the signs and symptoms of CVD. This newsletter will delve into some of the surprising and informative differences.

Numbers

Firstly, since female sex is associated with a longer life expectancy than male sex, women constitute a larger proportion of the elderly population in which the prevalence of CVD is greatest. Secondly, women tend to develop CVD about 10 years later in life than men. Risk begins to equal that of men when women reach their mid-70’s. The absolute number of CVD deaths since 1984 among the female sex has exceeded that of the male sex. In women, the prevalence of CVD varies according to racial/ethnic status. The prevalence of CVD among women ≥20 years of age is 47% among African Americans, 34% among caucasians, and 31% among Mexican Americans. Asian women ≥18 years of age have the lowest prevalence of CHD, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Data over the past decade have shown that women have a higher 30-day mortality rate after an MI. Various theories/reasons exist for this discrepancy, among them: delay in women seeking care, medical delay in recognition and treatment, and older ages at time of presentation among women compared with men.

Risk Differences for Women

Stroke affects more women than men. Common risk factors (for both sexes) include a family history of stroke, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Unique risk factors for women however, are pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, and frequent migraines. Women pre-menopause are protected by estrogen’s ability to raise HDL (good) cholesterol, and decrease LDL (bad) cholesterol. However, after menopause, women have higher concentrations of total cholesterol than men do. Elevated triglycerides are also a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease in women. Diabetes increases the risk of heart disease in women more than it does in men, and in women who have already had a heart attack, diabetes doubles the risk for a second heart attack and increases the risk for heart failure. Metabolic syndrome is the term for a group of risk factors, including large waist size, elevated blood pressure, glucose intolerance, low HDL cholesterol, and high triglycerides. These risks increase the chance of developing not just heart disease, but also stroke and diabetes. Research suggests that metabolic syndrome is the most important risk factor for heart attacks in women at an unusually early age. Women concerned about osteoporosis may take supplemental calcium. However, taking calcium without magnesium can upset the delicate balance between these two important minerals and may increase the risk for cardiovascular disease.

Symptomatic Differences

Crushing chest pain is considered the most common warning sign of heart attack (in men). In women, however, this is not a classic symptom. Many women have heart attacks without chest pain. Only one in eight women reported chest pain during a heart attack. Less familiar symptoms are more common in women than men. Some of the symptoms women may experience within a month before a heart attack include: unusual fatigue, sleep disturbance, shortness of breath, indigestion, anxiety, and weak/heavy arms. During an actual heart attack, symptoms for women may include: shortness of breath, weakness, unusual fatigue, cold sweat, dizziness, nausea, and weak/heavy arms. Other Factors Vitamin D insufficiency may be a factor in CVD for women. Studies have suggested that a deficiency predisposes individuals to increased risk of hypertension, ischemic heart disease, sudden cardiac death, or heart failure. Magnesium deficiency is widespread in the US, and a chronic low magnesium state is associated with a number of diseases, including coronary heart disease and heart attack. This mineral is involved in numerous and important aspects of the cardiovascular system. Electrical activity, myocardial contractility, and vascular tone rely on magnesium. Deficiency is linked with cardiac arrhythmias, heart attack, and atherosclerotic heart disease. Luckily, these two nutrients in supplement form are widely available and inexpensive.

Carrier Oils, Part One

Jojoba Oil Many of you are familiar with the benefits to skin and hair from taking essential fatty acids, such as fish or plant oils, in supplement form, but did you know that you can nourish from without as well?

What Are Carrier Oils?

Carrier oils come from the fatty parts of plants like seeds, nuts and sometimes fruit. They can be used to make infused herbal oils or to dilute essential oils and absolutes before applying to the skin or adding to a bath. Like essential oils, carrier oils are absorbed transdermally and have therapeutic value; unlike essential oils, carrier oils generally have a mild aroma and they do not evaporate quickly. Exposure to heat, light and air degrades all oils, so keep them tightly capped in a cool, dark place. Plastic bottles suffice for short-term storage, but refrigerate oils in glass bottles long-term. Don’t worry if refrigerated oils become cloudy or solidify, just bring them to room temperature before using. Rich in fatty acids, carrier oils are very emollient (softening and soothing) which makes them excellent bath and massage oils or for skin and hair care. Even people with oily skin can benefit by applying these rich plant oils. Especially good for oily skin are grape seed, almond and apricot oils. Many of these oils can be used to remove makeup as well. Generally, they are for cosmetic use only — not to be ingested orally. Our skin is our largest organ and it has a huge potential for absorption, especially when exposed to heat. A hot bath, for example, will open the pores making it easier for substances to pass deep into the skin’s tissues where blood vessels, hair follicles, sweat and sebaceous glands assist transdermal absorption. Therefore, it is very important to use only pure, high quality, cold-pressed oils. Make sure they are unadulterated except for the addition of Vitamin E (tocopherol), a natural antioxidant. Petroleum byproducts such as mineral oil (baby oil) and petroleum jelly are unsuitable for use as carrier oils since they clog pores and prevent the skin from absorbing nutrients and excreting toxins. Evergreen has a variety of carrier oils from such excellent companies as Heather Lorraine and LifeFlo and some herb-infused oils as well. Here is an introduction to some of the more commonly used oils.

Sweet Almond Oil

Sweet almond is perhaps the most popular carrier oil and has been used since ancient times for skin care since it softens, protects and nourishes the skin with antioxidants, minerals and vitamins. It has a light, slightly sweet, nutty fragrance and is light enough to use full strength. Good for all skin types, sweet almond oil is especially good for eczema; it helps relieve itching, soreness, dryness, inflammation and spider veins. It is also healing for burns. Combined with jojoba oil it makes a very nice, emollient massage oil.

Jojoba Oil

Also quite popular is jojoba (pronounced ho-ho-ba) which has a molecular structure similar to sebum (skin oil) so it absorbs readily and promotes skin respiration. It has a light to medium aroma, a light, silky texture and contains protein and minerals. Actually a liquid wax, jojoba “oil” is rich in antioxidants and does not go rancid. It may actually help keep other oils from turning. It can be used straight, but blend with other oils for massage since it penetrates quickly. Jojoba is a good carrier oil for rheumatism and arthritis since it contains anti-inflammatory myristic acid. It is also healing for inflamed skin, psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis. Use jojoba for body care and bath or massage blends since it is softening, protecting, nourishing and balancing for all skin types as well as healing and moisturizing. Its Vitamin E content slows the effects of aging. Jojoba cleanses the skin and hair by dissolving sebum — try a hot oil treatment for dry hair, dry scalp and hair loss — and can help control acne and oily skin or scalp for that reason. Jojoba is an excellent bath oil as it leaves no “ring.” Heather Loraine’s Golden Jojoba Oil penetrates slowly, making it good for psoriasis, seborrhea, cradle cap, acne, rosacea, eczema and very dry skin. Her Filtered Jojoba Oil is lighter, penetrates quickly and can be blended with heavier oils.

Apricot Kernel Oil

Apricot kernel oil is very rich and nourishing with minerals and vitamins. It has a faint aroma and a texture suitable for massage blends. It is very stable with a 12-month shelf life. It can be used full strength but is usually blended 10-50% with jojoba oil. It also blends nicely with grape seed, almond, sesame and avocado oils. Apricot kernel oil softens, protects and rejuvenates all skin types, but is especially nice for prematurely aged, sensitive, inflamed or dry skin. Use for skin care, massage and baths.

Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is a stable oil rich in vitamins with a slightly sweet, nutty fragrance. It is a thick, heavy oil so use at 10% dilution; blends nicely with grape seed, almond, sesame and apricot oils. Avocado oil improves elasticity and is useful for skin spots and for sun protection. Very nourishing for dehydrated skin, eczema and solar keratosis.

Grape Seed Oil

Grape seeds produce a light, odorless to slightly sweet, nutty-smelling oil containing minerals, antioxidants and fat-soluble Vitamins E and D. Use it alone or combine with heavier oils. Combines well with jojoba, almond, sesame and avocado oils. Useful for all skin types, grape seed oil is a collagen bonder, reducing wrinkles while it tightens and tones the skin. It will not exacerbate acne and is non-allergenic. Its light weight makes it a terrific massage oil. There are many more plant oils that can be used topically on skin and hair — some of them quite exotic and luxurious. In Carrier Oils, Part Two we explore the properties of these more exotic carrier oils.

Garden of Life Proteins: Something for Everyone

Garden of Life Grassfed Whey Powder It is not unusual for our customers to be bewildered by the myriad selection of protein powders on our shelves. Some, like whey and egg white, are derived from animals; others are single-source plant proteins like soy, hemp or pea; and a large number of them are mixed plant proteins that are blended to provide a complete amino acid profile. How is one to choose? To help simplify the choice, let’s narrow it down to Garden of Life’s five protein options: RAW Organic Protein, Organic Plant Protein, RAW Protein & Greens, RAW Fit and RAW Organic Meal.

WHAT THEY HAVE IN COMMON

All Garden of Life protein powders are certified USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified. All are derived from whole foods (sprouted grains and seeds) with high bioavailability (98%). Coping With Stress

Are you stressed out? Most of us are. Our twenty-first century lifestyle is very hectic. This time of year many of us are dealing with additional social and economic pressures as well.

GOOD NUTRITION

A strong, healthy body is better able to cope with the detrimental effects of stress so good nutrition is especially important. Many of us are already deficient in B vitamins and minerals which are depleted in times of stress. This can take its toll on our adrenals, hormones and immune system. By eating fresh, organic food in a relaxed atmosphere we nourish body and spirit. When rushed we are often tempted to skip a meal or resort to unhealthy foods, but try to eliminate refined carbs and unhealthy fats. Mix up a green drink or protein shake for fast nourishment. They are available in single-serving sizes, too which are great for traveling — toss a few packets and some bars into your purse or backpack so you have something nourishing to eat in a pinch. It’s also helpful to take a good, high-potency multivitamin/mineral supplement and omega-3 fish oil. And don’t forget to drink plenty of pure water.

REGULAR EXERCISE

Regular exercise helps our bodies cope with the negative physiological effects of stress and improves mood. (Antioxidants are important if you exercise strenuously.) Do something you enjoy with people you like for added psychological benefits.

ADEQUATE SLEEP

Getting adequate sleep can be difficult when we are dealing with stress. Supplemental melatonin works only if your levels are already low so you may prefer to take 5-HTP instead. It’s a precursor to serotonin/melatonin and works quite well regardless of melatonin levels. L-theanine improves sleep by increasing alpha brain waves. It’s fast-acting and long-lasting and has a synergistic affect with 5-HTP and melatonin.

ADAPTOGENIC HERBS

For long-term use, adaptogenic herbs are safe and effective. Adaptogens have a general normalizing effect on us. They revitalize and energize without negative side effects. Ginseng and eleuthero improve the tone and function of our adrenal glands which run on overdrive during times of stress. Ashwagandha helps restore mental and physical balance and can decrease stress-related overeating. And finally, lavender can reduce anxiety, depression and feelings of helplessness. Research has shown that this beloved herb is just as effective as an antidepressant drug with no negative side effects. It is available in Natural Factor’s Serenity Formula, and as an essential oil. Please visit the store for free information on relaxation response breathing and other ways of coping with stress. Everyone at Evergreen Nutrition would like to wish all of you a very happy (and relaxing) holiday season and good health, happiness and prosperity in the coming year. Flu Fighters

Sick woman At Evergreen Nutrition we want you to stay healthy all winter long, so here are some tips to help you be a flu fighter.

OPTIMAL NUTRITION

Optimal nutrition is very important. Antioxidant nutrients like SELENIUM and VITAMINS A, C and E can prevent the virus from replicating and mutating, increasing resistance and accelerating recovery time. For most of us at this latitude VITAMIN D supplementation is necessary. This hormone (yup, it’s not really a vitamin) offers many benefits including immune support. FISH OIL and PROBIOTICS also offer a wide array of health benefits beyond the immune system. And those suffering from IRON deficiency are more likely to catch the flu.

HERBAL ALLIES

There are many herbs that inhibit flu viruses, decrease the severity of symptoms, and/or reduce the duration of the illness. Here are a few: ALOE VERA, AMERICAN GINSENG, GARLIC, LEMON BALM, OLIVE LEAF, and medicinal mushrooms like REISHI. There are a variety of ESSENTIAL OILS that can be diffused into the air or used in a steam inhalation or bath. See our November 2012 newsletter or stop by the store for more information. Try ASTRAGALUS to strengthen immunity but go for ECHINACEA if you do get sick. Goldenseal has been over harvested, so our native OREGON GRAPE, which also contains berberine, is a better alternative. Berries are a tasty way to nourish and protect yourself from the flu. CRANBERRY and especially ELDERBERRY can prevent viral replication. Elderberry syrups are ideal for children because they taste so good kids will enjoy taking it. Studies show that UMCKA (Pelargonium sidoides) influences immune response in the upper airway mucosa and interferes with viral replication. It is effective for treating flu, cold, acute sore throat and bronchitis. In Germany, Umcka extract is an “approved drug” for acute bronchitis. It is even safe for children. Please don’t forget these common sense precautions: WASH YOUR HANDS often, get enough SLEEP and drink plenty of WATER. We wish you good health this winter and all year long.

OTHER FLU FIGHTERS:

  • CHLORELLA
  • DHEA
  • EPICOR
  • GLUTATHIONE
  • GREEN TEA
  • N-ACETYL-CYSTEINE
  • PROPOLIS
  • QUERCETIN
  • RESVERATROL
  • SPIRULINA
Salt lamps produce NEGATIVE IONS which, because of their effect on the immune system, decrease incidence of flu infection.

Andalou Naturals: Non-GMO Project Verified

The First Non-GMO Project Verified Beauty Brand

The people at Andalou Naturals believe that beauty is a choice: it’s about how you think, feel and behave. It’s as true for individuals as for companies. Their goal is to create products in accordance with who they are, to champion their beliefs and lead the way for others to follow. To achieve Non-GMO Project Verified status, Andalou Naturals had to rigorously confirm that over 200 source ingredients, as well as the manufacturing process for each ingredient, did not include GMOs of any kind. In 2011, Andalou Naturals became the first personal care brand to achieve 100% Non-GMO Project Verification on every single product. Today they are the number one facial skin care brand in the natural marketplace. Non-GMO Poster October 2017 is the third annual Non-GMO Month to help raise consumer awareness about GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and to celebrate Non-GMO Project Verified products. Non-GMO Month will be celebrated across the country and in Canada with more than 13,000 stores participating. The long-term environmental and health impacts of genetically modified organisms are unknown. However, since herbicide-tolerant GMO plants have been introduced, the use of toxic herbicides has increased giving rise to “superweeds” and “superbugs” and the use of even more toxic chemicals. To learn more about the impact of GMOs see the Non-GMO Project website or check out one of Dr. Stephanie Seneff’s YouTube talks.

Superior Source Ingredients

Andalou is committed to creating products using the highest quality ingredients. Superior Source Ingredient Standards include:

Nasal Irrigation

Neti Pot Do you suffer from allergies, chronic sinusitis, or frequent colds? Do you travel on airplanes or heat with wood? If so, then consider using a neti pot for nasal irrigation — an Ayurvedic technique for rinsing the nasal passages with salted water. Some say it should be part of our daily cleansing routine, especially if you are in a dusty or polluted environment. When congested it can be done up to four times daily. It is fast, inexpensive, and highly effective. We carry several styles of ceramic neti pots including beautiful handmade pots from Baraka as well as a non-breakable pot for traveling. Nasal irrigation (also called nasal lavage) requires a solution of 0.9% salinity to approximate the amount of salt found in our blood. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of finely ground neti pot salt into 8 ounces of non-chlorinated, body-temperature water. Stir to dissolve. It is VERY important that the solution is the right temperature and salinity. If it is not, it will be uncomfortable. To test it, take a sip — it should feel soothing in the mouth and therefore the nose. Use 4 to 8 ounces per nostril.

THE TECHNIQUE:

1) Stand at a sink, bend forward with your chin and forehead level with the floor (facing down), then turn to face sideways. 2) Gently insert the rounded spout into the “wing” of the top nostril just enough to seal it. 3) Relax! Breath through your mouth, and slowly pour the warm saline solution into your nostril. It will pass through the lower sinus and flow out the lower nostril. Remember to breathe through your mouth! (Touch the tip of the tongue to the top of the mouth if your throat is dry.) If the solution runs into your throat, your head may be tipped up — keep your forehead and chin parallel to the floor. 4) When done, exhale vigorously through BOTH nostrils to clear the nasal passages. 5) Repeat the procedure on the other side. If you are very congested, try switching back and forth several times. 6) Eliminate any remaining water from the nose by bending over and repeating quick breaths out the nose holding a tissue lightly over the nose. DO NOT close off one nostril or squeeze the nose since that can push water into the ear canals. Hardened blockages may need to be eliminated gradually over several attempts. Try pouring just a little at a time into each nostril since tipping back and forth can help dislodge encrustations. Of course, if you experience any pain stop immediately and consult a doctor. FOR SINUSITIS: Try adding Neti Wash Plus which combines goldenseal, grapefruit seed extract, and other botanicals with zinc. Add one dropperful to your neti pot for sinus and immune support.

BENEFITS OF NASAL LAVAGE:

  • Relief from allergy symptoms, chronic sinusitis, and post-nasal drip.
  • Less frequent colds with quicker recovery.
  • Improved sinus health, sense of smell and taste.
  • Helps to normalize pressure in the inner ears.
  • Vision is clearer because nasal lavage helps to clean the tear ducts for improved cleaning and moistening of the eyes.
  • Helps to rehydrate nasal passages, especially useful after air travel.
  • Yogic breathing (pranayama) is enhanced.
  • Helpful for singers, actors, and others who depend on their voices.

Vitamin B-12

Vitamin B12 liquid Vitamin B-12 is possibly the most well-known of the B family of vitamins. Even orthodox medical practitioners recognize its importance in treating pernicious anemia, for example. It is legendary for its ability to “raise energy” although that perception is probably somewhat flawed since it is really the other B vitamins together which truly support energy production in the body. This member of the B family has many important functions in the body which we will look at in this newsletter. B12 & Nervous System

Nervous System/Sleep/Brain

The nervous system is profoundly linked to this vitamin. Conditions ranging from Alzheimer’s disease to depression to insomnia and obsessive-compulsive disorder may result from deficiencies in this crucial nutrient. Vitamin B-12 protects and regenerates the fatty myelin sheath surrounding neurons and helps produce neurotransmitters. B-12 helps to normalize circadian rhythm by its involvement in the endogenous production of melatonin. Sleep is improved by B-12 increasing melatonin levels early in the night and reducing them at the end of a night’s sleep. Mood and thus depression are linked to this vitamin. Supplementation with B-12 may alleviate major depression (especially in elderly people), and also mild dementia in the elderly may be reversed with B-12. Anxiety and confusion may result from deficiency and thus may be improved with supplementation.

Cardiovascular Health

Excess homocysteine, a toxic amino acid metabolite formed in the body, is a risk factor for many cardiovascular diseases. These include atherosclerosis, congestive heart failure, and stroke. Homocysteine creates rampant inflammation, especially to the endothelium (inner arterial lining). Increases in atherosclerotic plaque greatly increase heart attack risk. Many factors contribute to elevated homocysteine levels, including excess consumption of high-methionine foods, especially red meat and dairy; age; obesity; smoking; and alcohol and coffee consumption. It is a function of several of the B vitamins to reduce levels of high homocysteine. B-12 is primarily involved, along with vitamin B-6 and folic acid (folate). These nutrients work together to maintain homocysteine levels in a favorable range.

Forms of Vitamin B-12

B vitamins are converted by the liver into body-ready forms. These are known as co-enzymated or methylated forms. In recent years these body-ready forms have become available as supplements, greatly improving absorption and efficacy of the vitamins. The body-ready form of B-12 is methylcobalamin. Not only is this the form the body uses in its processes, and therefore superior, it is also part of the methylation pathway, which is a detoxification system in the body involved with reducing toxic homocysteine. Methylcobalamin supplements are plentiful nowadays, surpassing the old cyanocobalamin form used for years, and generally are sublingual for best absorption. Some companies also make food-grown methylcobalamin which does not need to be sublingual.

Anemia & More

The formation of red blood cells is dependent upon B-12. Red blood cells transport oxygen to body tissues. Anemia, the condition where there are not enough red blood cells, therefore critically requires adequate levels of this nutrient to be rectified. It was thought for many years that only injectable B-12 would be effective in alleviating anemia. This has been shown to be incorrect; oral B-12 therapy (especially as methylcobalamin) is effective as well. Nature’s Plus Hema-Plex is a combination of iron and co-factors that nourish red blood cells. Vitamin B-12 is also involved with optimizing ratios of various types of white blood cells, thereby assisting the immune system. B-12 has been clinically studied for decades, and some conditions shown to have benefited from supplementation are lupus, viral hepatitis, tinnitus, and multiple sclerosis. Vitamin B-12 is found in animals and does not generally occur in plants. There are B-12-like compounds in some algae and microalgae but it is not certain whether these vegetable sources truly are absorbed and act as animal-derived B-12. It is for this reason that vegans and strict vegetarians should be concerned with supplementation. Other people at risk for deficiency are the elderly, since absorption of B-12 decreases with age. Deficiency symptoms are generally nervous system-related, such as neuralgia (numbness and tingling), confusion, insomnia, and fatigue. Pale skin and fingernails may reflect anemia due to a deficiency. It may take years for deficiency symptoms to manifest, however.

Availability & Selection

This vitamin is a part of specific formulas for homocysteine control, found in our Heart Health section. Evergreen has more than two entire shelves of various single B-12 products, including flavored sublingual lozenges, and it is available in cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin forms. Dosages range from 500 mcg up to 5000 mcg. Naturally it will be part of B-complexes, of which there are regular forms as well as co-enzymated forms.

Iodine: The Forgotten Mineral

Kelp Seaweed As far as minerals go, few have as much recent research devoted to them as iodine. Once a staple in every physician’s bag, after the introduction of pharmaceutical drugs this germ-busting substance was largely forgotten. Its ability to destroy bacteria, viruses and other pathogens has been known since at least the early 1800s when French physician Jean Lugol combined iodine with potassium iodide (the stable salt of iodine) and water to create a solution he used successfully for nearly any infectious disease. This formula became known as “Lugol’s solution” and was adopted by physicians throughout Europe and the Americas and was widely used until the 1920s. According to Dr. Guy Abraham, former professor of endocrinology at the UCLA School of Medicine, who has conducted iodine research for decades, this solution provides a total of 12.5 milligrams, which is exactly the “optimal dose” he recommends. The antimicrobial (germ-killing) aspects of iodine are far from its only benefits, as we will explore.

Thyroid Function

Most people will be familiar with iodine’s relation to the thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck. Iodine is crucial to proper thyroid function. In the 1920s goiter (enlarged thyroid gland) was very common. Poor soil conditions in certain regions caused a deficiency in the mineral. To combat this problem, iodine was added to table salt. For a time this did help reduce the incidence of goiter and thyroid problems, up until people began to reduce their consumption of (iodized) salt. The thyroid gland regulates the complete metabolic system of the body. This gland thus is extremely important to overall health. The thyroid uses iodine and also the amino acid L-tyrosine to make thyroid hormones. Insufficient intake of these nutrients will result in a decrease in the formation of these hormones. Some of the classic signs of low thyroid hormones are: slow, sluggish metabolism/weight gain; feeling cold; poor circulation; mental fogginess; and fatigue. Iodine supplementation may benefit people suffering these symptoms. SN Potassium IodideRadiation Protection Iodine is also well-known as protection for the body (specifically the thyroid gland) in the case of radiation poisoning/sickness. Radioactive iodine-131 present in radiation following a radiological or nuclear event (think Fukushima) is rapidly absorbed by the thyroid, where it destroys that gland and wreaks havoc on bodily systems. When there is sufficient non-radioactive potassium iodide in the thyroid gland, it blocks and prevents the absorption of the radioactive element and thus the damage. The recommended dosages here, approved by the FDA in the case of a nuclear event, are 65-130 mg. Each will protect the thyroid for 24 hours. It is important to have the stable iodine in the system for this protection.

Cancer

Iodine concentrates in and is vital for the functioning of the breasts, prostate, ovaries, and testes as well as the thyroid. Different tissues concentrate different forms of iodine. For example, the breasts and prostate concentrate iodine, and the thyroid and skin concentrate iodide. Other tissues can use either form. Scientific tests using estrogen-sensitive breast cancer cells exposed to iodine have shown that they are less likely to grow and spread. Iodine seems to make breast cells less sensitive to estrogen; it helps the body to metabolize various dangerous and carcinogenic forms of the hormone into estriol, a neutral or even “anti-carcinogenic” form. It is this hormone balancing action which helps prevent prostate cancer in men. Iodine supplementation also has been shown to reduce pain and swelling in fibrocystic breast disease. It is important to mention that experts disagree with what is a safe or recommended dose of iodine. In Japan, for example, the diet provides about 12 mg of iodine per day. This is 50 times more than the average American intake. It is interesting to note however that Japanese women have much lower rates of breast cancer and thyroid problems. One thing many experts agree upon is to consume multiple forms, so there are many combinations of iodide/iodine available, and these products supply much greater amounts than a kelp tablet, for example, which provides roughly 225 mcg.

A Helpful Tip from Biotics Research

You can put iodine’s germ-busting power to use in your neti pot. Simply add 1 part Biotics Liquid Iodine Forte to 4 parts water. Iodine is not only antimicrobial, but there is an iodine-dependant enzyme, mucanase, that is necessary to break up mucus. Nasal irrigation can flush out toxic mucus and kill the bacteria that breed in it making it useful treatment for sinus and bronchial conditions.

Safe Summer Fun in the Sun

Jumping into a lake, fun Summer is here and the outdoors beckons. While getting a moderate amount of sunshine daily is essential for good health, the welcome break in cloud cover brings with it a need for responsible sun protection. With so many different types of sunscreens available, it can be a bit overwhelming choosing a product which is effective in protecting from the sun’s rays as well as safe for the body. A published study by the Environmental Working Group  revealed that more than 75% of the 2,000 sunscreens they reviewed contained toxic chemicals. Aside from increasing risk of cancer, dangers from these compounds absorbing into the blood may include disruption of hormones, increasing free radicals in sunlight, and skin allergies and irritation. The best sunscreens available today are made without chemical UV absorbers such as oxybenzone, are non-nano technology ensuring no absorption into the skin/bloodstream, are reef safe (avoiding marine-toxic chemicals which may devastate coral reefs and marine life), and protect skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Mineral-based sunscreens have proven to form a safe layer of protection from both UVB (skin burning) and UVA (aging and cancer-causing) rays. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit on the skin’s surface and scatter, reflect, and absorb UV rays. Zinc oxide is adept at blocking both UVB and UVA rays, while titanium dioxide blocks mainly UVB rays and to some extent UVA rays. These minerals are absolutely safe for the skin and body and offer complete sun protection as well as the above criteria. Evergreen carries natural and effective mineral sunscreen products from several companies such as Keys, Mychelle, and Devita. Devita’s Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30 is a staff favorite, formulated for facial skin with non-nano zinc oxide, organic aloe vera gel, and hyaluronic acid. This extremely light yet moisturizing cream is not oily or greasy, is vegan, and paraben and GMO free. Devita also makes a sunscreen for the body. Solar Body Moisturizer is a heavier formula suitable for sensitive skin. This is an SPF of 32. Along with good sun protection, the summer months bring a need for safe and effective insect repellents. The best (safe/effective) products here utilize natural essential oils as their repellent ingredients. Citronella oil is justifiably famous for its insect repellent qualities, but to some extent, every essential oil has insect repelling properties. Some of the best include cedarwood (Grandma’s cedar closet), geranium, and of course citronella. Eugene’s own Quantum Health manufactures one of the best natural insect repellents around. Buzz Away Extreme is DEET-free, contains only the essential oils listed above in a vegetable oil base, and provides up to 4 hours of protection from biting critters. This formula repels not only mosquitoes, but also black flies and ticks.
