Zorb Provides EMF Protection

In the 21st century, (artificial) electromagnetic waves are everywhere and unavoidable. WiFi, cell towers, computers, televisions, and especially cellular telephones are constantly bombarding us with these electromagnetic fields/frequencies (EMFs). Artificial EMFs (radiation) work against and disrupt our bodies’ own magnetic field and thus damage our cells.

What Are EMFs/Magnetic Fields?

The earth and our human bodies produce their own (natural) low level magnetic fields which are at about the same frequency (7-30hz). Thus it seems our bodies are designed to align with the earth’s own magnetic field. It is even theorized that each cell in our bodies has its own magnetic field which regulates the cell. Every electronic device produces an artificial magnetic field (EMF) which resonates at a much higher frequency than our bodies. When EMFs come within proximity to our bodies they cause damage to the cells by disturbing our magnetic field. The stronger the magnetic field and the higher the frequency the more damage will occur. For instance, cell towers, microwave ovens, and now smart meters, emitting much higher waves than say, a television, are therefore more dangerous. Damage from these EMFs can manifest in a variety of ways, and cases of electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) will continue to be on the rise.  Symptoms include headache, fatigue, stress, sleep disturbances, skin prickling, burning sensations and rashes, pain and aches in muscles and many other health problems. In fact, according to one report, 5 percent of the general population now suffers from “hyperelectrosensitivity,” which can manifest with symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and nausea. Zorb Man Superhero In modern life it is not possible to eliminate electronic and wireless devices from our daily life/use. However, there are products and technologies which may help to protect yourself and your loved ones from electromagnetic radiation. A company called Zorb in Florida manufactures products designed for protection from EMF radiation. From small devices for your cell phone or computer to pendants and bracelets, unparalleled protection is offered.

Cell Phones

A recent study by the Swiss Public Health Institute involving 700 adolescents showed that EMFs may have a harmful effect on memory performance in specific brain regions which are exposed during phone calls. A part of the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), has classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans, based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer, and associated with wireless (cellular) phone use. There is evidence that the use of mobile phones during pregnancy can be related to early spontaneous abortions. Zorb™ offers their Cell Phone EMF Radiation Shield. This ceramic disc is formed from twenty high grade oxide minerals heated and then nitrogen cooled. It has been proven to absorb cell phone radiation. The Zorb tested to shield up to 91.7 percent of EMF emitted from the mobile device. In addition to this product, they offer a stronger version to be used with larger electronics such as tablets, computers, television, and the ubiquitous WiFi. Cell Shield Radiation Electromagnetic Neutralizer 5X is recommended for larger items and can be used in home, office, or car.

Wearable Scalar Pendant

Another product by Zorb for EMF protection uses scalar energy to produce the desired protective benefits. The Zorb Pendant is also a disc created from minerals, in this case a lava-based compound yielding 71 minerals structurally bonded together using nanotechnology. The scalar energy technology involves converting the body’s own heat energy into bio-energy, or body-compatible frequencies which repel damaging high-frequency EMFs. Negative ions are also emitted which offset the positive ions of EMFs. Other benefits range from increased circulation to increased energy to improved immune function.

Shungite Protection

Zorb has another product featuring a different form of protection from EMFs. The Zorb Shungite Bracelet is made of shungite stone, a fascinating rare mineral with a unique molecular structure. Shungite contains carbon “capsules” or “tubes” called fullerenes which absorb harmful EMFs, transmuting them into the lower frequency of the earth, or our bodies, rendering them harmless. These fullerenes have also been shown to have powerful antioxidant properties which will benefit the wearer. Shungite deposits are found in Russia, and Russian research has shown that the stone has the ability to purify water, in addition to its other properties. Wearers report better sleep and energy as well as emotional balance. Particularly now, with the advent of 5G technology and its attendant much higher radiation output, protecting oneself from harmful EMFs may be wise. Zorb’s line of products ensures that protection is available to you.

Why Choose Organic? The Hidden Dangers of Glyphosate

Ever wonder about the widespread increase in autism, diabetes, obesity, adrenal insufficiency, dementia, celiac and other autoimmune diseases? Dr. Stephanie Seneff has. She is a Senior Research Scientist at MIT, who has been studying the impressive correlation between the rapid development of these and other disease conditions and the widespread use of glyphosate. Glyphosate, a derivative of the amino acid glycine, is an herbicide developed for use on genetically modified (GM) crops. It is the active ingredient in Roundup and other plant killers and the most widely used herbicide on the planet. Since its introduction in the early 1970s, there has been a rapid rise in many chronic diseases and Dr. Seneff, among others, believes glyphosate is at the bottom of it for a number of reasons. (For graphs depicting these correlations click here.) Glyphosate Mimics Glycine The “gly-“ part of glyphosate (N-phosphonomethyl-glycine) refers to the glycine-like chemical structure that enables glyphosate to insert itself into our glycine receptors and glycine-containing proteins thereby interfering with normal physiological function. Moreover, these impostor proteins are very difficult for our bodies to break down for elimination so they can easily accumulate in our tissues. They are able to cross the blood-brain barrier and negatively impact brain chemistry contributing to neurological disease and they get into our bone marrow where they interfere with immune function. As if that’s not frightening enough, these unnatural proteins can also get into our DNA and RNA. Although glycine is the smallest, simplest amino acid it has huge and complex responsibilities throughout our bodies. To name just a few:
  • It is necessary for the manufacture of proteins (such as collagen), enzymes, hormones and the important antioxidant glutathione.
  • We need it to maintain skin, red blood cells, muscle mass and the various tissues that form our joints.
  • Glycine helps break down fats and is required for energy production as well as for maintaining the integrity of the gut lining.
  • Along with taurine and gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), glycine functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter and plays a role in healthy sleep and mood, cognitive and nerve function, and has been studied as a treatment for a variety of neurobehavioral disorders.
When you realize how important glycine is for optimal physiological function it is easy to see how the glycine-glyphosate switch can ravage the body in a number of ways. But Wait, There’s More! We are not ourselves alone — we live symbiotically with tens of trillions of beneficial microorganisms, our microbiome. These organisms have a wide range of essential benefits beyond digestion. They comprise the majority of our immune defenses and they make vitamins, enzymes and other beneficial substances for our use. In addition, they play an important role in balancing mood, in fact most of our serotonin is made in our gut. But our “good buddies” are also adversely challenged by the presence of glyphosate. This insidious herbicide works via the shikimate pathway. Although humans do not have this pathway, our microbiome uses it to manufacture precursors to melatonin, serotonin, melanin and folate; for the synthesis of the amino acids phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan; and methyl groups. (Methyl groups are necessary for detoxification as well as neurotransmitter and nucleic acid synthesis, for example. Inadequate methylation may cause birth defects, autism, depression or impaired cognitive function.) The disruption of the microbiome is part of the one-two punch of glyphosate that can lead to a multitude of chronic diseases and unnecessary suffering. What to Do? We can help to bring about positive change by not using glyphosate-containing herbicides and by supporting farmers who don’t use them. Granted, organic food is more expensive — in the short term. But what is the long-term cost to our health and wellbeing, to our water, to viable soil, to the entire planet? At Evergreen, we have several lines of vitamins made using certified organic whole foods. MYKIND is certified USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified. MEGAFOOD and WHOLE EARTH & SEA are made from non-GMO, organically grown fruits, vegetables and herbs. NEW CHAPTER VITAMIN CODE cultured vitamins are created from organic foods. In addition, they are committed to supporting organic farms, especially small family farms, worldwide. Help save the planet, one vitamin at a time! If you would like to learn more about Dr. Seneff’s work, there is a half-hour interview with Dr. David Purlmutter as well as an hour-long presentation of Dr. Seneff addressing AutismOne.  Both are very interesting and worth watching and sharing.

MSM: Deeper Than Skin

In a previous newsletter, Collagen: Deeper Than Skin, we showed how beauty is more than skin deep because ubiquitous collagen literally holds us together, creating inner health that is reflected in outer beauty and grace. In this newsletter, we will introduce you to a related substance, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), that also helps create beauty from within.

What Is MSM?

MSM is a natural chemical found in green plants and animals (including humans). It is the therapeutically active part of DMSO, but it is safer to use and very well tolerated. MSM is a rich source of bioavailable sulfur. The third most abundant mineral in our bodies after calcium and phosphorus, sulfur is found in every cell with 50% in muscle tissues, 10% in bones, 10% in hair and 10% in skin.

Why is Sulfur Important?

Sulfur bonds can be flexible which helps give protein molecules, including enzymes, their unique shapes and determine their biological activity. One layer of our cell membranes is made with sulfur-containing amino acids that enable the transport of nutrients and waste into and out of our cells. Connective tissue and cartilage are made from proteins with these flexible sulfur bonds and insufficient sulfur leads to decreased elasticity and stiff joints, muscles and other tissues like the lungs and blood vessels. MSM contributes sulfur molecules to many other endogenous substances including glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen and keratin. As with collagen synthesis, vitamin C plays a crucial role in the way our bodies utilize MSM’s sulfur. Sulfur is also required for cellular energy production and for carbohydrate metabolism via insulin.

Inner Health

MSM binds to receptor sites on mucous membranes of the digestive, urogenital and respiratory tracts helping to maintain proper permeability of those tissues. In addition, MSM crosses the blood-brain barrier making it useful for headaches including migraines. It can also help improve mood, increase concentration and alertness, alleviate anxiety and the detrimental effects of stress. MSM can be taken orally or applied topically to treat a wide variety of conditions including: muscle cramps and chronic pain; inflammation of the joints, eyes and mucous membranes; bursitis, tendonitis, rheumatoid and osteoarthritis; osteoporosis; scleroderma, scar tissue and stretch marks; and it accelerates wound healing. In addition, MSM is good for oral health and can be useful for gum disease. Taken orally, MSM has benefits for: • Immune System: allergies, autoimmune diseases like systemic lupus erythematous, shingles, influenza and some parasitic infections of the gut and urogenital tract. • Digestive System: constipation, heartburn, ulcers, diverticulosis and intestinal permeability. • Cardiovascular System: blood circulation, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. • Metabolic Function: obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. • Reproductive System: premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Peyronie’s disease. • Detoxification: liver problems, removal of aluminium and mercury, hangover and lactic acid reduction. • And More: chronic fatigue syndrome, nausea, Alzheimer’s, lung disorders, interstitial cystitis and even snoring.

Outer Beauty

MSM’s activity helps keep skin healthy and beautiful, too. By inhibiting cross-linking of collagen that leads to wrinkles, and by increasing elasticity, MSM helps keep skin youthful. It can also be used to alleviate wind- and sunburn, acne, rosacea, seborrhea, psoriasis and other rashes as well as diminish scarring. Sulfur is found in high concentrations in the keratin of hair and nails, so MSM can help with hair loss and improve hair condition and nail growth. Although sulfur-gifting MSM plays an important role in maintaining beautiful skin, hair and nails, it also works on a deeper level to counter the disadvantages of aging, stress and health disorders that can leave us feeling — and looking — old before our time. To be vibrant and beautiful, we have to go deeper than skin.

Novel Approaches to Urinary, Prostate & Ovary Support

Men of a certain age invariably will come to have issues involving the prostate, generally benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This condition, whereby the prostate becomes enlarged, carries with it the classic symptom of urinary retention, in which the bladder does not empty completely. Obviously this affects a specific demographic and can be frustrating and uncomfortable for those affected. People affected by other urinary issues, however, include women and men of any age. Some of these issues include sudden urgency, stress and activity leaks, bed-wetting, and accidental leakage. Luckily for all of these people, two new products have recently been introduced which may offer relief and a resolution of symptoms.

Urox Pro

From Australia, with twenty years of research and development and clinical trials behind it, comes Urox Pro, an herbal formula developed to assist bladder control symptoms, including overactive bladder and incontinence. Urox Pro is a blend of three concentrated herbal extracts which has been shown to be more effective than other alternative herbals. The formula works to strengthen and tone the muscles in your bladder wall, pelvic floor and sphincter. The combination of herbs also works by improving collagen and connective tissue support and relaxation and toning of the muscles in the bladder and surrounding area. This allows the bladder to fill appropriately and empty effectively, and one achieves bladder strength, tone and control.   The formula’s herbs are Crataeva nurvala, horsetail extract (Equisetum arvense) and Lindera aggregata. In Ayurvedic Medicine, Crataeva nurvala is the herb of choice for urinary disorders. It supports the bladder to correctly and efficiently empty and refill. The horsetail extract works to reduce urination frequency and urgency. Lindera supports healthy bladder tone and function, in addition to supporting the kidneys. Randomized, placebo-controlled clinical research has proven that Urox  increases bladder control and reduces the symptoms of urinary frequency, urgency, nocturia (having to wake to urinate during the night) within weeks of use. Trial participants in the latest trial consumed 2 capsules for 2 months with the following statistically significant results:
  • Total average daytime urinary frequency returned to normal (less than 8 times a day)
  • Nocturia (getting out of bed at night for the toilet) was halved
  • Less urgency
  • Reductions in bladder accidents
  • Significant reductions, even elimination, in the need for incontinent pads and padded underwear

Healthy Prostate & Ovary

Healthy Prostate & Ovary is based on a Vietnamese herb with a long history of use in its native country. Crinum latifolium was so revered in Vietnam that it was reserved for only royalty, and was referred to as the “Medicine for the King’s Palace” and the “Royal Female Herb.” It has the ability to target both prostate and ovarian health conditions. In addition, it has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cytotoxic effects. Over 500 successful case histories have shown Crinum‘s ability to alleviate symptoms of BPH. The International Hospital in Vietnam reported that 92.6% of BPH patients using Crinum had good results (confirmed by measurements of prostate size and clinical evaluations by urologists). One Vietnamese study tested Crinum in 627 patients with BPH. The results showed a 33-93% reduction in urinary symptoms, and 90% of the patients experienced a reduction in prostate size. A significant number of them achieved a normalization of prostate size and urinary health after three months of therapy. There were no significant adverse reactions. Another study found Crinum to have 89.18% effectivity in treating BPH. Not as much research has been done to date on Crinum for ovarian conditions, but in Vietnam the herb has been shown to alleviate polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Uterine fibroids and cysts have also responded well to the use of Crinum, in many cases. Urox Pro may be found in our Urinary Health section, while Healthy Prostate & Ovary is found in both our Prostate section and Women’s Health section.

Preserve Your Prostate, Improve Your Performance

Preserve Your Prostate, Improve Your Performance.

by Terry Lemerond, Founder and President of EuroPharma, Inc. As men age, they may notice some dramatic changes in their health: prostate and urinary difficulties and sexual performance issues. While both are associated with getting older, they don’t have to be.

Nutrients That Prevent Prostate Problems

Curcumin can stop many of the factors that lead to enlarged prostate or even prostate cancer: inflammation, oxidation, and the susceptibility to tumors. It also inhibits the effects of dihydrotestosterone and androgen that cause benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and affect prostate growth. I recommend curcumin (BCM-95) which is blended with turmeric essential oil for enhanced absorption, blood retention, and the inflammatory-fighting power of ar-turmerone. A tannin-free French grape seed extract (VX1) with highly absorbable oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), stops inflammation that causes cells to become cancerous, and prevents cancer cells from connecting to blood vessels, depriving them of oxygen and nutrients. Omega-5 from pomegranate seed oil inhibits prostate specific antigen (PSA) and stops the growth of blood vessels that feed tumors – something that silybin from milk thistle does as well. In addition to these botanicals, vitamin D3 is an absolute must.

Recharging Sexual Performance

One of the best botanicals for enhancing libido is red ginseng (Panax ginseng). Ginseng activates nitric oxide – the body’s “on switch” molecule that promotes energy, drive, and performance. Clinical studies prove what a difference this can make. The International Index of Erectile Function, (IIEF) is a common measure of the factors most important to sexual function: hardness, duration, and overall performance. One double-blind, placebo-controlled study reported that men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction (ED) in the red ginseng group noted a significant difference on the IIEF-5 scale, from 16.4 to 21.0.   The red ginseng that I prefer is hydroponically grown without pesticides and provided with exactly the proper nutrients it needs in ultra-clean conditions. This special process concentrates rare compounds called noble ginsenosides at seven times that of conventionally grown and processed ginseng. Noble ginsenosides are up to 17 times better absorbed than classic ginsenosides, making this a very effective botanical. A clinically studied blend of apple polyphenols, grape flavonoids, and saffron extract is also highly effective for ED. In a pilot clinical study, it delivered impressive results for men between 45 and 65 years old: 74 percent improved their hardness score, 72 percent improved their IIEF-5 score, and 71 percent would recommend it to others.

The Synergistic Power of Nutrients & Men’s Health

The nutrients I’ve outlined here can improve prostate health and recharge performance. Adding them to a regimen today will yield excellent results. *THESE STATEMENTS HAVE NOT BEEN EVALUATED BY THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION. Avocados, Almonds & Blueberries, Oh My!

avocado

Two Fruits and a Nut

More people than ever today are recognizing the importance of a whole-food diet for health and longevity. A quick search of trending topics on social media and the internet will reveal the interest in “getting back to” or beginning a diet/lifestyle featuring foods as whole/wholesome, unprocessed, and nutritious as possible. The benefits of these whole foods generally are quick to notice for most people and among the most popular are increased energy, a fitter body, and improved appearance—whether weight loss or hair, skin and nail benefits. In this newsletter we will look at the attributes of three of the most popular and perennial foods: avocado, almond, and blueberry.

Avocado

Extremely popular lately in health and foodie blogs, but also with a time-honored reputation for healthy benefits, is the funny-looking green fruit, the avocado. Most famous for its fat content, the avocado also possesses a unique nutritional profile in other aspects. The fruit is one of the few food sources of the amino acid glutathione, the “master detoxifier” in the body, and also contains carnitine, an amino acid involved in fat metabolism with profound cardiac benefits, and which is otherwise found in only animal-sourced foods. Avocados contain high amounts of the carotenoid antioxidant lutein, justly famed for its role in preventing macular degeneration and helping to improve vision. The pigment chlorophyll is found in the skin and fruit, lending the green color and assisting with oxygenation of tissues. Both soluble and insoluble fiber are found in the avocado in good amounts, and in the vitamin category, high levels of vitamin E are found, along with vitamin C, most of the B vitamins, and even vitamin D has been detected. Avocados can be included as a healthy addition to the Mediterranean or Ketogenic/Paleo diet as their fat profile is similar to olive oil. Primarily monounsaturated fatty acids are found. These fats have shown favorable effects on lipoprotein measurements, endothelieum vasodilation, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, antioxidant capacity, and myocardial and cardiovascular mortality. In simpler terms, they help to decrease unhealthy LDL cholesterol levels and help to increase protective HDL, and may maintain healthy blood pressure levels as well. Don’t be afraid of the high calorie content. This is the original health food! Israeli scientists have discovered that avocados contain compounds which stimulate the growth of collagen, and the unsaponifiable portions of the oil are anti-inflammatory, improving pain in arthritic joints. Genuine Health includes AvoVida® in its Fast Joint+ Care Extra Strength to support healthy cartilage and flexible joints. Avocado oil topically is a fantastic skin oil, nourishing dry and rough skin. Evergreen carries Heather Loraine Avocado Oil. New to Evergreen from local fave Keys skincare, is Avo Jel, a vegan alternative to petroleum jelly. This is made solely from fresh avocados, whipped by a proprietary process into a jelly. All sorts of skin issues benefit from application of this healing gel. They also make an avocado Zinc Jel with skin-protective and anti-inflammatory zinc oxide.

Almond

Botanically classified as a fruit, although considered as a nut for commercial and culinary purposes, the almond is an old, old friend. Thought to have originated in western Asia and North Africa, the almond has been written about in historical texts including the Bible. A major portion of almond’s benefits comes from its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids. In addition to their cholesterol-lowering effects, almonds’ ability to reduce heart disease also is partly due to the antioxidant action of the vitamin E found in the almonds. Magnesium and potassium are found in good amounts in the almond, further helping the heart. Copper and manganese are present as well, and are both involved in the production of the key antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase. Recent research reveals that almond skins contain appreciable levels of antioxidants. Blood tests conducted at Tufts University showed that eating whole almonds with their skins significantly increased both flavonoids and vitamin E in the body. These phytonutrient antioxidants are profoundly anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective, showing that LDL’s resistance to oxidation was enhanced up to 52%.  Sweet almond is oil is a classic skin-care staple, also beneficial as a massage oil and hair conditioner. Heather Loraine’s Sweet Almond Oil comes in two sizes.

Blueberry

Few fruits have had as much research devoted to their benefits as this wildly popular purple berry. The Vaccinium genus includes not only the blueberry, but relatives huckleberry, cranberry, bilberry, and lingonberry. These fruits are found in many different varieties and regions of the world. The list of potential phytonutrients in the blueberry is staggering: flavonoids such as quercetin and myristicin; anthocyanins (responsible for the vibrant color) including delphinidin and cyanidin; stilbenoids including resveratrol—yes, that resveratrol—and pterostilbene. Each of these phytochemicals has reams of research supporting actions and benefits in the body. Aside from these compounds, blueberries contain vitamins C and K, manganese, copper, and fiber. It is the antioxidant compounds which evince the most interest in blueberries. The various antioxidant, anti-inflammatory chemicals present may help support an exhaustive range of conditions and diseases. • ANTHOCYANINS: The brightly colored pigments may improve night vision, restore visual acuity after glare, and alleviate other eyesight ailments. These compounds also bind to collagen fibers to prevent its breakdown. Aside from skin benefits, this action also protects blood vessels. Conditions such as stroke, atherosclerosis and varicose veins are prevented/improved. • STILBENOIDS: The most famous chemical here is resveratrol, whose properties scarcely need to be outlined here. (See our Newsletter.) Suffice to say that it is a powerful antioxidant and protector. Blueberries do not contain as much as red wine, but there is another tremendously powerful relative of resveratrol present. • PTEROSTILBENE: Recent studies have shown that pterostilbene displays many of the same properties as resveratrol: it not only acts as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, but it also has antidiabetic, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, and chemopreventive (anti-cancer) properties. Pterostilbene seems to be better absorbed than resveratrol, and is found in high concentrations in blueberries.

Blueberries for Brain & Eye Health

Famously, blueberries have been shown to support cognitive function. In one study involving older adults (with an average age of 76 years), 12 weeks of daily blueberry consumption was enough to improve scores on two different tests of cognitive function including memory. Evergreen carries a blueberry-based brain formula from Dr. Perlmutter’s line. Dr. Formulated Brain Health Memory & Focus Adults 40+ contains 600 mg of organic wild blueberry fruit as does their Attention & Focus for Kids formula.  Megafood puts organic blueberry in many of their formulas, including their Daily C-Protect Booster Powder. Evergreen’s own Ultimate Eye Formula contains a trademarked blueberry concentrate combined with bilberry (500 mg total). Despite its small size, the blueberry is a powerhouse, and its inclusion in many supplements for health and longevity will not fade anytime soon.

Mighty Magnesium

Anxiety, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure (hypertension), heart disease, insomnia, migraines, and osteoporosis. Did you know that one single, mighty mineral can prevent and treat all of these serious health conditions? Not only that, but this mineral’s deficiency in the body may cause: kidney stones; depression; bowel disease; musculoskeletal conditions including fibromyalgia and chronic neck pain; nerve problems including gastrointestinal spasms and vertigo; asthma; nausea; cystitis; tooth decay; and sudden infant death syndrome. The importance of this mineral’s presence in the body cannot be overstated. Magnesium is this miracle-worker, and it is required for more than 325 enzyme reactions, contributing to energy production, calcium regulation, protein synthesis, and blood pressure regulation among others. An adult body contains roughly 25 grams of magnesium, with 50-60% in the bones and most of the rest in soft tissues. The heart, muscles and kidneys are especially dependent upon this mineral for optimal functioning. The mineral calcium contracts muscles, and magnesium relaxes them. Since the heart is the body’s hardest-working muscle, adequate magnesium stores positively influence nearly every cardiovascular function and condition. Heart attack victims are always found to have low coronary magnesium levels. Magnesium may mitigate stress, relieving muscle tension and improving sleep. Magnesium homeostasis in the body is controlled largely by the kidneys, and urinary excretion is reduced when magnesium status is low. Dietary magnesium is affected by many factors. Crop soil is depleted of magnesium unless it is replaced, cooking and processing deplete the mineral, even from high-magnesium foods. Alcohol, coffee, refined sugar, excessive protein, and prolonged stress all deplete magnesium from the body. People at special risk of deficiency include Type II diabetics and people with gastrointestinal diseases such as Crohn’s disease or celiac, which impair absorption. Good food sources include green leafy vegetables, seaweed, nuts, whole grains, legumes, and dark chocolate. Supplements: How to Choose? People taking single large doses of calcium supplements especially should be aware that they may require magnesium. Too much calcium in the body is not only unusable and causes a host of problems including hardening of the arteries, but throws off the healthy magnesium balance the body needs to use the calcium. The available array of magnesium supplements is bewildering at first glance. Generally speaking, any mineral bound to an amino acid, which is referred to as a chelate (pronounced KEY-late), is a superior form. Look for glycinate, taurate, or aspartate here. These forms have very good absorption in the body. Magnesium citrate is also a well-absorbed, popular form, as is gluconate. Magnesium chloride is often found as a liquid. Several poorly-absorbed forms such as magnesium oxide and hydroxide are often used as laxatives. Various delivery methods exist as well. Aside from pills, there are liquids, powders, chewables, and even a transdermal oil. This latter may be applied topically anywhere on the body to relieve muscle tension and deliver its benefits into the body through the skin, bypassing the stomach and thereby avoiding the gastrointestinal upset which may occur with some people taking oral supplements.

Recently, powder forms of this hard-working mineral have become popular. Evergreen is featuring two different brands of magnesium powder supplements in November and December. New from Garden of Life, in their Dr. Formulated line, comes Relax & Restore Whole Food Magnesium. This product features a magnesium chelate made from organic pea protein, as well as live probiotics along with the standard citrate form found in other powder products. Each serving provides 350 mg of magnesium. Available in three flavors and two sizes, this is a handy way to get the magnesium your body craves, particularly before bedtime which is when many people take this product and assure themselves a restful sleep.

Another popular powder we have had for some time is Natural Calm. This product has 325 mg of magnesium citrate per serving and like the Garden of Life powder fizzes up nicely in water to make an effervescent drink. Many of our customers report taking this at bedtime with great results. Available in two flavors and sizes, this product and Relax & Restore are certified gluten free, non-GMO and vegan. Relieve muscle tension and stress, feed your heart and sleep better all with mighty magnesium, the unsung hero of minerals!

Folate Forms & Functions

Folate plays many important roles in our physiology. It is needed for healthy cell function and division; to convert food into energy; to make red blood cells and neurotransmitters; and to synthesize and repair DNA. In addition, folate lowers homocysteine, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Folate is especially nourishing to the nervous system where it facilitates growth of axons and neurons making it essential for healthy mood, memory and cognitive function. But folate is probably best known for its role in the development of neural tube tissue into healthy fetal brains and spinal cords.

What Is Folate?

Folate is the natural form of Vitamin B9, one of the water-soluble B-complex nutrients. It occurs naturally in foods, especially green leafy veggies (“folate” is from the Latin word for leaf, folium). Folate is converted in the digestive tract into 5-MTHF, a biologically active form used by our cells. Confusingly, folate is also a general term for folic acid and other substances with similar nutritional purposes.

What Is Folic Acid?

Although folate and folic acid are both forms of Vitamin B9, they are not the same. Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate commonly used for supplements and fortified foods. Most folic acid is not converted to 5-MTHF in the digestive system but in the liver and other tissues — a slow and inefficient process that can lead to an unhealthy excess of non-metabolized folic acid in the blood. For those eating fortified foods and/or who do not have the enzyme necessary for the conversion, this excess may be especially problematic. Taking folic acid along with other B vitamins (especially B6 and B12) as well as Vitamin C, can help make the conversion more efficient. Or simply use a safer form that does not require the conversion.

What Is Folinic Acid?

Folinic acid is a metabolically active derivative of folic acid that is more stable and does not require enzymatic conversion in order to be utilized. It is used for folic acid deficiency and as an antidote to folic acid antagonists (drugs that prevent our bodies from using folic acid). Folinic acid is found naturally in foods such as leafy greens and it is a good form for supplementation since it can increase folic acid levels in cases where other forms can not. Because of the differences between these forms, on supplement labels you will now see folate/folic acid amounts listed as “mcg DFE” (micrograms Dietary Folate Equivalent) instead of just mcg (micrograms). Since our bodies can not make folate, we must get it from dietary or supplemental sources. Foods rich in folate include brewer’s yeast, leafy greens, legumes, asparagus, avocados, Brussels sprouts, liver and eggs. When taking supplemental folate, look for metabolically active forms like folinic acid or 5-MTHF. Evergreen’s Methyl Folate uses Quatrefolic® which is structurally similar to the reduced (bioactive) form of folic acid. This means that MTHFR conversion is unnecessary so this important nutrient is immediately utilized by our bodies. For adults, the daily recommended intake of dietary folate equivalents (DFEs) is 400 mcg with an upper limit of no more than 1,000 mcg per day from all sources.

Alpha Lipoic Acid—The Universal Antioxidant

Alpha Lipoic Acid, also known as Lipoic Acid or simply LA, is a very unique compound naturally occurring in the body in small amounts. It has been called “the universal antioxidant” since it is both water and lipid (fat) soluble, thereby as an antioxidant able to protect both aqueous-based and fat-based areas of body tissues. This enables it to act both inside the cell and in the intercellular spaces. Most other antioxidant substances are limited to activity in one or the other environment only, such as the water-soluble Vitamin C. This property makes LA unique as an antioxidant, as mentioned, but there are many other benefits to the body as well, which we will explore.

Antioxidant Activity/Liver Protection

Antioxidant nutrients can help protect the body against the damage that can cause many diseases, among them heart disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Alpha Lipoic Acid has the ability to react with many different free radicals including singlet oxygen, superoxide free radicals, and also the very dangerous peroxynitrate free radical involved in chronic inflammation, such as that associated with rheumatoid arthritis. Not only does it quench these free radical threats, LA has the singular ability to recycle other antioxidants in the body. It directly recycles Vitamin C and indirectly Vitamin E. Lipoic Acid increases glutathione levels in cells. Glutathione is the body’s most powerful master antioxidant and is responsible for protecting cells against various oxidants, free radicals and cytotoxic agents. It is such a powerful glutathione booster that it has been used to successfully reverse Amanita mushroom poisoning. The alpha-amanitin toxin present in Amanita phalloides (death cap mushroom) and other Amanita species causes death in 90% of the cases of human consumption. It is one of the most poisonous of all known mushrooms. The toxins cause total liver and kidney failure resulting in death. In the case of the liver shut-down, the toxin blocks the liver’s production of glutathione. Given soon enough after ingestion, LA restores liver levels of glutathione and promotes recovery. Many people are familiar with the herb milk thistle’s liver-protective qualities. It accomplishes this protection by raising that organ’s glutathione levels.

Metabolic Energy/Glucose

Along with Coenzyme Q10, Lipoic Acid acts as a co-factor in the two energy-generating cycles in our cells which turn food into energy. The glycolytic (sugar-burning) cycle and the Kreb’s (citric acid) cycle use fats, sugars and amino acids as fuel. Lipoic Acid helps convert pyruvate from the glycolytic cycle into Acetyl Coenzyme A which is part of the high-energy Kreb’s cycle. LA is also heavily involved in glucose metabolism, and thus has been used for decades as an effective treatment for diabetes and diabetes-related issues. It increases the burning of glucose in a way that is comparable to, but independent of insulin. Studies of adult diabetic patients have shown increases in uptake and utilization (burning) of glucose by 50%. LA reduces insulin-resistance in diabetics and, partly due to its antioxidant effects, reduces, inhibits and improves related neuropathies. Another of its abilities is in preventing glycosylation of sugars and proteins, the damaging and undesirable cross-linking of the two resulting in stiff, inflexible, aging tissues. This process can exacerbate and promote arteriosclerosis, among other deleterious effects.

Brain/Neurological Protection

In a famous study from 1993, Lipoic Acid was shown to improve the long-term memory of aged mice, likely by preventing free-radical damage to cell membranes. A 2001 study of nine Alzheimer’s patients found that supplementation with LA for 12 months resulted in a decrease in oxidative stress which led to a stabilization of cognitive function. LA also prevents ischemia (restriction in blood supply causing oxygen deprivation) in both the heart and brain. Other studies are showing promising results for Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.

Supplements

Lipoic Acid supplements range from 100-600 mg dosages. Diabetic patients be aware that by virtue of its insulin and blood glucose activity, it may interfere with diabetes medications. Evergreen Nutrition carries a variety of Lipoic Acid supplements in our Antioxidant Section, and many formulas in our Blood Sugar Section also contain this remarkable substance.
