The Goodness of Greens

The Goodness of Greens!

The Goodness of Greens

Green foods are some of the most nutrient-dense, health-giving foods available. Chock full of amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants, they can help anyone to achieve radiant health. In this newsletter we will look at several of the most popular and well-known of these emerald powerhouses.

Microalgae

Microalgae are single-cell or multicellular algae having existed for billions of years. They are among the oldest living organisms in the world. Microalgae grow worldwide in salt and fresh water and can be cultivated. Harnessing the sun’s energy since they have no roots or leaves, they produce a large amount of oxygen and nutrients. Two of the most important microalgae families are spirulina and chlorella.

Spirulina

SpirulinaThis multi-celled blue-green algae has been safely used as food for centuries. Spirulina grows in saline-rich water around the world in subtropical to tropical zones. The Aztecs in Mexico and the natives of Chad have harvested this algae from lakes where it grows naturally. The term “superfood” should have been coined to describe spirulina. It is easier to say which nutrients it does not contain: namely vitamin C. It contains complete protein, including all eight essential amino acids. Its protein content, by volume, is greater than soybeans or beef, often considered the benchmark for protein levels. It is a highly usable protein in terms of bioavailability to the body. It contains the entire B-complex, including the elusive vitamin B-12 which does not generally occur in plant-based foods. It is high in iron, calcium, and other minerals. It is extremely high in beta-carotene and also zeaxanthin, essential for vision support. It is the only whole-food source of valuable essential fatty acid GLA, elsewhere found only in seed oils such as hemp and borage. As far as novel compounds, spirulina contains a pigment called phycocyanin which has been shown to be a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immune system activator. Japanese studies on this compound revealed it to increase interferon production and NK cytotoxicity (cancer-killing cells).
Other studies showed pronounced antiviral activity, including inhibiting herpes simplex virus and human cytomegalovirus. After the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986, spirulina was given to children suffering from high radiation levels and was shown to effectively remove radiation from their urine. Other Russian studies involving rats exposed to x-rays showed phycocyanin to correct radiation levels. Spirulina has been safely used as an appetite suppressant. It contains good levels of the amino acids tyrosine and phenylalanine which can suppress hunger. Last but not least, it is high in detoxifying chlorophyll.
Evergreen carries spirulina from several companies. From our own Evergreen label comes a certified organic spirulina, available in powder form or convenient tablets. Pure Planet offers a powder as well as vegan capsules.

Chlorella

HealthForce Chlorella MannaOften lumped in with spirulina, chlorella is a superstar in its own right. Unlike spirulina, it is a one-celled organism, a fresh-water green algae. Its name comes from its high content of chlorophyll, the highest of any plant. It is about 2% by weight, ten times the amount found in alfalfa. Famed for detoxifying the bloodstream and liver and cleansing the bowel, chlorophyll also resembles the hemoglobin portion of the blood and may assist in the development of oxygen-carrying red blood cells. Chlorella is over 50% protein and contains an impressive array of nutrients. It is extremely high in beta-carotene and contains the full B-complex. Minerals include phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sulphur, iron, calcium, manganese, copper, zinc, and cobalt. Such high nutrient content enables it to be of use in third world nations for malnourished/starving masses.

Detoxification with Chlorella

Numerous clinical studies have proven chlorella’s ability to detoxify and assist with removal of heavy metals. The clinical usefulness to detoxify cadmium was shown by a scientific study demonstrating increased urinary excretion of cadmium in persons suffering from cadmium poisoning. The chlorella binds strongly to cadmium and will not give it up to the body. Another study used a brewer’s yeast culture which was poisoned and killed with the addition of P.C.B., mercury, copper, and cadmium. When chlorella extract was added to these toxic substances, the brewer’s yeast remained alive. Other studies showed that chlorella cell walls absorb and hang onto uranium and lead, facilitating their removal from the body. This unique property of picking up toxic substances from the environment (the body) and holding onto them has powerful applications for heavy metal overload/poisoning.
Sun Chlorella

CGF

Chorella is an exceedingly rich source of nucleic acids. It is approximately 10% RNA and 3% DNA. Some scientists consider these nucleic acids to be “long life factors.” These compounds revitalize at the cellular level, involved in cell function, and as the body ages production of them slows down. They provide the basic building “material” for the immune system, tissue repair, the production of enzymes, and more. Extracts of chlorella provide an especially interesting compound rich in these nucleic acids called chlorella growth factor, or CGF for short. In trials with mice, CGF extended lifespan by 30%.

Immune System Support

Chlorella (and CGF) have been found to possess marked antiviral activity in multiple studies. It induces interferon levels, stimulating immune macrophage activity. As well, doctors have found chlorella to activate both T and B immune cells.

Cholesterol Support

Numerous studies have been conducted on chlorella with regard to cholesterol reduction. It appears to have a stimulatory effect on lipoprotein synthesis in the liver and also increases excretion of free cholesterol into bile. Increased excretion of cholesterol into the small intestine will lower blood cholesterol concentration. A Japanese study using rats reported that chlorella powder “significantly inhibited” the rise in rats’ serum cholesterol when fed a high cholesterol diet. Two other studies showed a drop in the cholesterol in serum and livers with the administration of chlorella.

Barley Grass

Pure Planet Just BarleyBarley grass flies under the radar and deserves more attention. Everything wheat grass does, barley grass can do and more. High in detoxifying/blood-building/alkalizing chlorophyll, barley grass also contains vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, iron, and other minerals. Barley grass is rich in easily-absorbable protein, and is one of the richest sources of powerful antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase. This enzyme is highly anti-inflammatory, particularly benefiting osteoarthritis, in addition to neutralizing the strongest free radicals in their assault on body tissues. Barley grass antioxidant enzymes also help protect against UV and other radiation. Other antioxidants present are beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol succinate, a form of vitamin E. Laboratory tests have shown that this special form seems to inhibit several types of cancer. Barley grass has been shown to be anti-ulcer, anti-inflammatory, and to lower blood sugar levels. James Balch, co-author of best-selling book Prescription for Nutritional Healing has said, “The variety of vitamins and minerals found in barley juice is unmatched by any other single fruit or vegetable.”
Evergreen carries two certified organic barley grass juice powders, one from Pure Planet and the other from HealthForce. These products have had the cellulose removed through juicing to enhance absorption and increase nutrient bioavailability. Since barley grass is taken from the grass shoot portion of the plant before the grain forms, it does not contain gluten. However, celiacs may want to use caution here, regardless.

Tocotrienols: Beyond Vitamin E ~ Amazing Health Benefits for You

Red Palm Oil Source of Tocotrienols

Tocotrienols: Beyond Vitamin E ~ Amazing Health Benefits for You ~

Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) is a well-known substance and has been studied for decades. Its benefits include profound antioxidant activity with a particular affinity for inhibiting lipid peroxidation of tissues. Lipid peroxidation is a major factor in cardiovascular disease and other conditions. In nature vitamin E is found as eight distinct components: four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. For over fifty years the “active’”component of vitamin E was considered to be d-alpha tocopherol because it was found to cure gross deficiency symptoms in rats and was therefore considered the only necessary component. Low blood levels of tocopherols are associated with higher rates of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Tocotrienols are the forgotten half of vitamin E, and in nature are distributed as widely as tocopherols. In this newsletter we will delve into these compounds and their impressive effects. Tocotrienols In some foods, such as wheat germ and corn, tocopherols predominate. In some others, tocotrienols predominate. The highest sources here are rice bran and red palm oils. Chemically, tocotrienols are similar to tocopherols, except for a unique “isoprene” tail. Due to this structural difference, tocotrienols exert biochemical effects tocopherols cannot. Tocotrienols appear to be powerful antioxidants, possibly stronger than vitamin E. However, in addition to their antioxidant activity they have been extensively studied in the areas of cardiovascular disease and cancer prevention.

Antioxidant Activity

Tocotrienols have been shown to surpass vitamin E in antioxidant activity by multiple mechanisms. They have a greater efficiency at recycling after absorbing and disarming a free radical, they have a more uniform distribution within the cell membrane, and have a greater ability to break into and move through membrane lipids which makes interaction with free radicals more efficient. These activities can also result in enhanced protection of lipid-carrying molecules traveling in the blood, such as LDL and HDL. Tocotrienols assist in protecting the lipid fractions of the blood which, in turn, helps to prevent the progression of atherosclerosis.

Cardiovascular Health

Both animal and human studies have shown that tocotrienols have positive effects on serum lipids in subjects with high cholesterol. They decrease the liver’s capacity to manufacture cholesterol by inhibiting a key enzyme. In one double blind, crossover study, serum concentrations of total cholesterol and thromboxane (a potent inducer of platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction) decreased significantly in only those subjects given a natural, palm derived tocotrienol mix. Amazingly, some of the participants had lowered their cholesterol by 31% in only 4 weeks when given 200 mg gamma tocotrienol. The drop was in the more dangerous LDL and VLDL cholesterol fractions while the “good” HDL was left unchanged. It was also noted that tocotrienols may protect against atherosclerosis since tissue injury from free radicals is the final pathway of damage in the diseased artery. As well, tocotrienols were shown to cause a decrease in thromboxane levels in humans by 20-26% and a decrease in platelet aggregation (blood cell stickiness — a risk factor for disease).
Palm Fruits

Palm Fruit Oil is a Good Source of Tocotrienols

Cancer

Tocotrienols are classified as isoprenoids due to their isoprene chain, mentioned above. A number of isoprenoids have been tested for their anti-cancer activity. That the effects of individual isoprenoids are additive suggests that the anti-carcinogenic nature of plant-based diets is due at least in part to the tumor growth-suppressive action of diverse isoprenoid constituents of fruits, vegetables, and cereal plants. A tocotrienol blend was found to have the strongest anti-carcinogenic effect on a virulent melanoma strain. When fed a tocotrienol-rich palm oil diet, a group of rats exposed to potent carcinogens had significantly less tumors than those not fed the palm oil. The cancers here were mammary and liver. It was summarized that tocotrienols possess a marked tumor suppressive and chemopreventive effect. The term chemopreventive applied to a substance means that it must demonstrate significant ability to prevent the formation of a malignant tumor and to suppress or halt or reverse tumor growth once it has begun. Tocotrienols have been used in conjunction with the breast cancer anti-estrogen drug Tamoxifen. Results showed that they are successful inhibitors of both estrogen receptor positive and negative cell lines.   AC Grace Unique E TocotrienolsEvergreen Nutrition carries several vitamin E products containing a small percentage of tocotrienols, and one stand-alone tocotrienol product. Unique E Tocotrienol from A.C. Grace Company is a high-potency product supplying 125 mg of a full spectrum tocotrienol complex. The company recommends taking this product away from a vitamin E supplement as tocopherols have been shown to inhibit tocotrienol absorption. It is also recommended to take with an evening meal for superior absorption. This product is free from gluten, soy, and GMOs.

3 Lesser-Known Beauty Supplements

3 Lesser-Known Beauty Supplements

3 Lesser-Known Beauty Supplements

Supplements for the health and beauty of hair, skin, and nails have long had their place on our shelves. Many nutrients and herbs are well-known for these purposes. Biotin is famous for its support of hair and nails, for example, and certainly these days everyone has heard of collagen for skin enhancement. In this newsletter we will explore three lesser-known beauty supplements, substances which are generally not included in targeted formulas but have powerful benefits for skin and more.

Lutein

Justly famous for eye health, including its support for ARMD (age-related macular degeneration), lutein’s action in protecting vision arises from its ability to protect the delicate eye tissues from UV light. It accomplishes this through its powerful antioxidant activity which extends to skin as well. Lutein benefits skin in multiple areas. Along with its sister molecule zeaxanthin, lutein has been shown to protect the skin from photoaging (damage due to sunlight exposure) as well as photocarcinogenesis (sunlight-induced skin cancer development). Skin is exposed to numerous environmental assaults that lead to damage and premature aging. UV light in particular creates reactive oxygen species/oxidation (damage) in the skin. The primary defense against this damage is the antioxidant capacity of the skin.

In several mice studies oral lutein intake significantly decreased multiple inflammation markers in skin after exposure to UV rays. Lutein was also shown to accumulate in the skin of supplemented mice. Thus, lutein modulates the skin’s response to UV radiation and may contribute to the defense against the damage caused by solar radiation. Lutein does far more than merely protect from light damage, however.

A study in Italian women aged 25-50 years was designed to measure efficacy of lutein upon five skin physiology parameters (surface lipids, hydration, photoprotective activity, skin elasticity, and skin lipid peroxidation). Lutein was administered either orally, topically, or in combination. Results obtained showed that the oral lutein supplement increased skin hydration by 38%, skin elasticity by 8%, and the level of lipids by 33%. Lutein also decreased oxidation of lipids — the process that causes skin degradation — by 55%. In the group that received both oral and topical lutein, hydration increased by 60%, elasticity by 20%, and lipids by 50%. Lipid oxidation decreased by 55%.

This powerful xanthophyll carotenoid (does not convert to vitamin A) is found in many fruits and vegetables. Kale, collard and turnip greens, and spinach are among the best sources, with egg yolks, tangerines, oranges, and corn also providing a good supply.

Jarrow Lutein      Solgar Lutein 40 mg       Solgar Lutein 20 mg

Evergreen carries a large selection of lutein products in our vision section. Our own label offers a lutein/zeaxanthin combination with added carrot root extract. Also in our vision section but equally useful in the skin beauty area is Evergreen’s Ultimate Eye Formula, providing 10 mg of lutein along with a bilberry extract, known for strengthening collagen as well as protecting eye tissues. Both these products are vegan, gluten free, and non-GMO. Jarrow Formulas’ Lutein is a 20 mg dose in an oil-containing softgel, helpful as this carotenoid is better absorbed with fat. From Solgar comes a whopping 40 mg dosage in a safflower oil base, sure to protect and beautify your skin as well as protect your eyes. They also offer a standard 20 mg dosage product.

Astaxanthin

This incredibly powerful antioxidant’s biochemical structure is both water- and fat-soluble, giving it the ability to protect the entire cell, both inside and out. Thus astaxanthin is able to protect the entire body from oxidative stress and damage. Its skin benefits are impressive, to say the least. It supports skin during sun exposure (UV radiation), as shown in a 2002 study. A group of people was given 4 mg of astaxanthin a day for two weeks, after an initial test was done to see how much UV light was needed to redden their skin or cause mild sunburn. The results were that 4 mg per day increased the amount of time it took for UV radiation to redden the skin. As such, this carotenoid may be termed an internal sunscreen, also protecting the skin from photoaging.

Astaxanthin’s skin benefits go beyond simple UV protection. A 2006 study appeared in the journal Carotenoid Research. A group of women with an average age of 47 were divided into two groups, one receiving 4 mg per day of astaxanthin and the other receiving a placebo. At the end of six weeks, over 50% of the women taking the supplement reported improvements in skin moisture content, roughness, fine lines and wrinkles, and elasticity. Not only were there self-described skin improvements across multiple parameters, but the womens’ skin was also examined by dermatological instruments. These examinations showed clear improvements in fine lines and wrinkles, elasticity and skin dryness, and moisture levels. Another study using a topical astaxanthin (cream) showed a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles. Truly this king of carotenoids shows itself to be an internal cosmetic, improving skin and reversing signs of aging and damage on many levels.

Solgar Astaxanthin 10 mg Evergreen stocks several potencies of astaxanthin, with doses ranging from 4-12 mg of this amazing nutrient. Solgar offers a high potency 10 mg softgel free of all common allergens including gluten.

Sea Buckthorn

The sea buckthorn berry is one of the most nutrient-dense fruits on earth. It provides a full array of carotenoids, tocopherols (vitamin E), plant sterols, and minerals. In addition it contains high levels of vitamin C and essential fatty acids, in particular the rare omega-7 palmitoleic acid. This vast range of nutrients gives sea buckthorn oil its number of health-supporting abilities, ranging from an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory to a mucous membrane tissue regenerator. The palmitoleic acid content in sea buckthorn oil is responsible for much of the skin support and regeneration activity. This fatty acid is a constituent of sebum, the skin’s own protective oil coating, and is found in high concentrations in the skin of young people. Levels decrease as one gets older, and this is partly responsible for the skin’s aging process. In both oral and topical applications, sea buckthorn oil has been shown to reduce different types of dermatitis such as atopic eczema and irradiation-induced dermatitis. This anti-inflammatory effect was studied in depth in Russia where the oil has been used to treat radiation burns.

Beyond its anti-inflammatory effects, this oil supports skin health and beauty in general. It has been shown in studies to significantly slow down the aging process of mature skin by hydrating skin, increasing softness and elasticity as well as decreasing the amount of deep wrinkles. Moisture levels of skin are increased with oral intake or application of the palmitoleic-acid containing oil.
Terry Naturally Omega-7
Evergreen carries several forms of this unique berry/oil. From Terry Naturally comes Omega-7, a vegan softgel clinically shown to relieve skin dryness by up to 48%. This product is non-GMO and gluten free. From Life-Flo comes an organic 1 oz. sea buckthorn seed oil for cosmetic use. It may be added to creams and lotions or used straight on skin. The high levels of carotenoids in the oil give it a deep red-orange color and if used straight it can stain skin due to this concentration. Only a few drops are needed undiluted.

Testosterone ~ Increase Levels Naturally

Testosterone Family

Testosterone ~ Increase Levels Naturally

Testosterone is a complex hormone, and as a general topic is beyond the scope of one newsletter. In this newsletter we will look at natural ways to increase this hormone. Herbs and nutrients may help the body to produce its own testosterone, as opposed to replacement therapy in which a bio-identical hormone is introduced to the body. Testosterone is produced in both sexes but is famously known as the “male sex hormone.” It is involved in much more than sexual characteristics, however. In men it is involved in maintaining everything from mood to heart health. Low levels may contribute to more than the well-known symptoms of loss of sexual desire and muscle mass. Low testosterone may contribute to prostate cancer, among other things.

Nutrition for Production/Maintenance

Solaray OptiZincThe most critical nutrient for testosterone is the mineral zinc. Zinc is an essential cofactor for the body’s production of testosterone. As well, supplemental zinc may increase levels that are depleted as a result of zinc deficiency. Zinc is also crucial for male reproductive health in general and the health of the prostate gland. Young men need zinc for developing sexual health and men older than 40 should be getting enough of this mineral for healthy prostate function and to maintain testosterone levels which naturally decline around this time. Doses of 30-50 mg are recommended, with higher levels needing a balance with copper as the two minerals compete. Some zinc supplements have added copper for this reason. Bio-AE-Mulsion Vitamins A and E are involved in testosterone production and regulation. Hand in hand with these fat-soluble vitamins goes fat itself. Dietary fats, specifically saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, are essential also for the production and utilization of testosterone. Phytosterols, fatty compounds in plants, inhibit the conversion of testosterone to the undesirable form, dihydrotestosterone. This “bad” form is involved in male-pattern baldness and prostate enlargement. Saw Palmetto is an example of a phytosterol-containing herb. Source Naturals Triple Boron Boron may increase serum testosterone levels. It doesn’t raise it to higher than normal physiological values but does appear to restore levels in older males to levels that they had in their 20s and 30s.

Aromatase Inhibitors

MRM ChrysinTerry Naturally Clinical OPC These compounds preserve the body’s existing testosterone levels by inhibiting an enzyme involved in converting testosterone to estradiol, an estrogen compound. Examples of this are chrysin, a flavonoid from passionflower, and grape seed extract. Chrysin is a staple supplement of many body-builders who seek to boost their testosterone levels for lean muscle mass gains.

Herbal Enhancement

Solaray Tribulus Tribulus terrestris is a plant native to Europe, Africa, and Asia. Tribulus has been shown in animal studies to raise testosterone levels, possibly through an effect on Luteinizing Hormone. Human studies are divided, although this herb has long been a popular ingredient in herbal testosterone formulas. Planetary Herbals Horny Goat Weed Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium) is another popular men’s herb. It has been shown to stimulate nitric oxide production and thus has benefits for erectile dysfunction. As far as testosterone, one rat study showed a tremendous increase in testosterone production. It appears to work as a testosterone mimetic. Source Naturals Tongkat Ali Tongkat Ali, also known as long jack, is an Indonesian herb which reputedly raises levels of free testosterone. Anecdotal evidence is strong on this herb, and it is very popular with male customers here at Evergreen. Some studies have found that the extract can indeed increase testosterone levels.

Evergreen Offers Several Options

Testosterone Boosters Evergreen carries all of the above herbs in our Men’s Health section. Also available are targeted formulas such as Irwin NaturalsTestosterone UP, containing a powerful blend of zinc, plant sterols, chrysin, and Tongkat Ali extract. In addition, Irwin offers their Testosterone UP RED which also includes tribulus, Tongkat Ali, and plant sterols as well as other herbs (including ginkgo and ginseng) plus L-citrulline and L-arginine for nitric oxide enhancement. Triple Force Test Charger from Natural Sport boasts zinc along with horny goat weed, tribulus, and Tongkat Ali. T Male from Nature’s Plus features zinc and boron along with tribulus.

Menopause ~ Balance Hormones Naturally

Menopause: Balance Hormones Naturally

Menopause ~ Balance Hormones Naturally

Menopause is usually seen as an apprehensive milestone in a woman’s life. The transition period, pre-menopause, may begin around age 40. Perimenopause is the stage between age 35-45. This is characterized by powerful hormonal changes with wide-ranging effects on a woman’s bodily systems. Hot flashes and night sweats are the number one complaint as far as uncomfortable symptoms. In this newsletter we will look at this stage of life and some natural remedies for menopausal complaints. The menopausal years and ensuing symptoms are the result of an imbalance in hormones. Deficiencies and excesses of both estrogen and progesterone may occur as ovaries and adrenals slowly stop producing reproductive hormones essential for pregnancy. Since these hormones are also protective for womens’ bodies, these imbalances may leave her vulnerable to heart disease and osteoporosis, among other health issues. For many years, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was the treatment for women in menopause. The replacement of hormones was to reduce the distressing symptoms of menopause but also to provide protection against heart disease and breast cancer. In 2002, however, researchers conducting a very large clinical study determined that HRT does not protect against these conditions and in fact causes them. The women in the study were told to cease their study medication. Since then many women have looked for alternative and less harmful methods to manage their menopausal symptoms.

A Beneficial Herb for Symptomatic Support

Black Cohosh

Black Cohosh For more than 50 years numerous clinical trials have been conducted on the root of black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) in the area of menopausal issues. It is the single most studied botanical for perimenopause and menopause symptoms. It has been approved by the German Commission E to treat hot flashes, heart palpitations, nervousness, irritability, vertigo, insomnia, and depression. Collective findings on black cohosh suggest it is most supportive for the following menopause-related symptoms:
  • Hot flashes – day or night
  • Mood swings
  • Sleep disorders
  • Body aches
While this herb acts similarly to other phytoestrogens, it does not contain any phytoestrogens itself, making it a safe choice for all women in their perimenopausal and menopausal years. The average recommended dose of the standardized extract of black cohosh is 40-80 mg per day. The dosage used in most clinical trials is 40 mg twice daily. There are no known contraindications and no known drug interactions.

Xenoestrogens

In menopause, changing levels of hormones cause imbalances. Small amounts of estrogen are still produced and imbalances may occur when these natural levels are combined with synthetic and environmental/xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens include petrochemical-derived pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, solvents found in such products as nail polish, plastics, and meat from livestock fed with feed that has been sprayed with pesticides. These compounds are hormone disruptors, mimicking estrogen and binding to the body’s own estrogen receptors. This can create estrogen dominance which leads to many problems. The most harmful estrogen mimic action of these synthetic and xenoestrogens is their ability to interfere with estrogen metabolism. After estrogen completes its activity in target cells, it is metabolized in the liver using several pathways. One pathway results in beneficial (good) estrogen metabolites. These are then released into the bloodstream where they benefit the heart and bones. There is also a “bad” estrogen metabolism pathway, resulting in bad metabolites which result in hormonal metabolism imbalances, and can cause or worsen mood swings, irritability, osteoporosis, and many other conditions. Assisting the liver’s proper detoxification/metabolism pathways then, is important for healthy hormonal balance and may assuage some of the distressing perimenopausal/menopausal symptoms. Xenoestrogens

Critical Nutrient Support

DIM

Cruciferous Veggies are a Source of DIM Diindolymethane (DIM for short) is a natural plant compound. It is found in broccoli and cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables. It is one of the cancer-fighting substances found in this vegetable group. DIM improves hormonal balance by shifting the way estrogen is metabolized in our bodies. It is able to shift estrogen metabolism to the “good” pathway. DIM supplements can result in increased amounts of estrogen broken down into the good metabolites. This also results in a reduction in the “bad” estrogen metabolites. It does not increase or decrease the hormone itself — it merely directs how it is metabolized. This healthier pathway is also associated with breast cancer prevention. Dosage is generally 120 mg and women often take it everyday to ensure proper estrogen metabolism. Women suffering from hormone imbalance symptoms may find more relief by doubling this dose. This product may also be used by men to assist with detoxification of xenoestrogens and thereby improve/maintain a healthy balance in testosterone levels.

Enzymes, Part 2 ~ Inflammation Support

Enzymedica Enzymes

Enzymes, Part 2 ~ Inflammation Support

“Enzymes are substances that make life possible. They are needed for every chemical reaction that takes place in the human body. They are the manual ‘workers’ that build the body from proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, just as construction workers build our homes.”

— Dr. Edward Howell, Enzyme Nutrition: The Food Enzyme Concept, 1985

In our last newsletter we delved into the world of enzymes, specifically digestive enzymes and their benefits. We learned there are several classes of enzymes within digestive enzymes. In this edition we will look at the many benefits of proteolytic enzymes beyond simple digestion. We remember that proteolytic enzymes break down protein into amino acids in the digestive tract for absorption. There is a plethora of other actions these proteases can have, however, beyond simple digestion.

What Else Can Proteolytic Enzymes Do?

Proteases are able to dissolve almost all proteins as long as they are not components of living cells. Normal living cells are protected against lysis (breakdown) by the inhibitor mechanism in them. Bacteria, parasites and fungal forms are proteins. Viruses are cell parasites made of nucleic acids covered by a protein film. The ability of proteolytic enzymes to “digest’’ proteins extends to breaking down undigested protein, cellular debris and toxins in the blood, sparing the immune system this duty. Thus, the immune system can then concentrate its full action on the bacterial, parasitic, fungal or viral invasion.

Benefits Beyond Digestion

Some potential uses of systemic enzymes are:
  • Arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Sports trauma, including sprains and hematomas.
  • Bronchitis, both acute and chronic.
  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Herpes simplex.
  • Pancreatitis.
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus.
  • Surgery including operative dentistry and knee surgery.
  • Burns.

Caution: Proteolytic Enzymes Are Not For Everyone

A few cautions:
  • Proteolytic enzymes should not be used by hemophiliacs.
  • They should not be used before or after major cardiovascular operations where there is increased risk of bleeding.
  • Extreme caution is advised for individuals on anticoagulant therapy.

Enzymes can be a complex, confusing subject and hopefully we will be able to educate our readers on these vital “sparks of life.” This edition of Evergreen’s newsletter will focus on digestive enzymes.

What are Enzymes?

Enzymes are energized protein molecules which stimulate chemical reactions throughout the body. There are three broad categories of enzymes:
  • FOOD ENZYMES are contained in all raw food and begin working in the mouth and upper portion of the stomach before the body begins its own digestive process. All raw foods contain only enough enzymes to digest that particular food. The cooking and processing of food destroys all of its enzymes. Because of these reasons, our bodies must produce the majority of the digestive enzymes we require.
  • DIGESTIVE ENZYMES are secreted along the digestive tract to break food down into nutrients and waste. This allows nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream. They begin their work at least 30-60 minutes after eating.
  • METABOLIC ENZYMES are made in the body and are responsible for running all organs, tissues and cells. Metabolic enzymes are produced by our cells, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and other organs.
Digestion, absorption and elimination require digestive enzymes. The body’s production of digestive enzymes may be compromised by many factors, including diet, age and lifestyle. Typically the modern American diet is very low in enzymes from food due to processing and cooking. In addition, a diet too high in simple sugars, animal proteins and fats will exacerbate problems. Enzymes in the body are rapidly depleted metabolizing these foods. Because of a lack of functioning enzymes, nutrients are not properly absorbed and undigested food may ferment in the intestines, rather than being efficiently eliminated. These toxins may then stress the liver and kidneys. According to Dr. Howell, the leading researcher on (plant and food) enzymes, “we see that diets deficient in enzymes cause a 30% reduction in lifespan.”

Fortunately, Enzyme Supplements are Available

Human digestive enzymes, produced mainly in the pancreas, include pepsin, trypsin, lipase, protease and salivary amylase or ptyalin (pronounced TIE-len) and other amylases. Our bodies do not make cellulase, an enzyme necessary for the digestion of fiber, so it must come from the raw foods we eat. Supplemental digestive enzymes may alleviate many common digestive issues, including indigestion and heartburn. In addition, they may alleviate allergies due to minimizing the presence of antigens in the form of incompletely digested proteins in foods.

Various Kinds of Digestive Enzymes

Pancreatin as a supplement comes from an animal source. It contains the three main classes of digestive enzymes: proteases for protein digestion, amylases for carbohydrate digestion and lipases for fat digestion. Protease breaks down proteins into amino acids, which are essential for the construction of enzymes, cells and hormones. There are several kinds of protease including:
  • Pepsin is a proteolytic (protein-digesting) enzyme derived from porcine stomach and is the main component in gastric juices.
  • Bromelain and Papain come from the pineapple and papaya, respectively, and are also proteolytic enzymes. They will not assist in carbohydrate and fat digestion.
Lipase breaks down fats (lipids) and is essential for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. It is also used to build cell membranes and maintain a healthy balance of triglycerides and cholesterol. Enzymes that break down starches and sugars help provide energy to fuel the body as it works. Amylase is needed for the digestion of carbohydrates and assists in the production of energy. A deficiency may result in allergies and acidosis. Cellulase breaks down fiber membranes to free locked-in nutrients. It increases absorption of plant foods and protects against Candida. Lactase breaks down lactose (milk sugar) from dairy products. Two-thirds of the world population do not produce lactase. Cramps, gas and diarrhea are often caused by the inability to digest lactose. Sucrase breaks down sucrose, a carbohydrate found in sugar. Excessive sucrose and salt in our diet affect the production of sucrase, resulting in weakening of white blood cells. A broad-spectrum digestive enzyme supplement will contain the three main classes of enzymes mentioned above. In addition there may be enzymes for lactose and gluten/casein digestion, as well as specific enzymes for hard-to-digest legumes and cruciferous vegetables. Some products will contain animal-source enzymes such as pancreatin or pepsin. There are also many vegan plant-sourced enzyme supplements available.

How are Enzymes Measured?

Some confusion arises from the way in which enzymes are measured. Generally they are not measured by a weight, such as milligrams, in the way herbs or minerals are measured. Weight measurements alone do not provide enough information to determine enzyme potency from one product to another. Enzymes are measured by their potency or “activity.” This may depend upon such factors as the type of compound the enzyme can break down (substrate). For example, a protease may be measured by “GDU” which stands for gelatin-digesting units.

Masks Off! Help for “Maskne”

Masks Off! Help for "Maskne"

Masks Off! Help for “Maskne”

Chafing. Rashes. Pimples in sensitive areas. No, this is not your posterior after your first time on a horse-back ride since you were a child. This is your skin’s irritation after wearing a face mask for two years. With Oregon’s indoor mask mandate drawing to a close, our faces will be revealed to the world again. Those faces, however, may be victims of the above issues and more. In this brief newsletter we will discuss some of the skin issues which may have developed from constant mask-wearing, and products and remedies which may help to alleviate these problems and heal your long-unseen face.
Face masks can cause skin irritation, mild bruising, acne (the dreaded “maskne”), and contact dermatitis. Particularly prone areas of irritation are the bridge of the nose, behind the ears, or along the chin line. The chin area may be sensitive due to moisture from breath compounding issues caused by rubbing of the mask. As far as acne goes, friction from the mask along with increased heat and humidity from trapped breath creates a breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria.

Soothing, Gentle Skin Care Ideas – Outside In

Some good, basic skin care — cleansing, hydrating, protecting — may go a long way toward alleviating your mask-generated facial skin irritations. To combat these types of irritations it is important to wash your face with a gentle cleanser. A good moisturizer is sensible as well. Here are a few ideas:

Mad Hippie Cream Cleanser
Mad Hippie’s Cream Cleanser is a pH-balanced cleanser which won’t strip the skin of its protective oils. Soothing and hydrating oils of macadamia and jojoba thoroughly cleanse skin while antioxidant-rich botanicals protect.

Annemarie Borlind Gentle Cleansing MilkAnnemarie Borlind’s LL Regeneration Gentle Cleansing Milk with its LL Biocomplex plant and patented mode of action stimulates the skin’s own cell renewal and soothes with extracts of calendula and chamomile. It contains no mineral oil derivatives and is vegan.

Home Health Hyaluronic Acid Cream
Home Health’s Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizing Cream maintains healthy hydration with its hyaluronic acid content promoting the retention of moisture. Also present are skin-enhancing botanicals and vitamins.

A Simple DIY Recipe

Raw Manuka HoneyRaw honey is the perfect vehicle for a soothing, hydrating facial mask. It draws out dirt and impurities, attracts moisture to the skin, and is mildly acidic to benefit the skin’s acid mantle of protection. It also is antibacterial so it is especially valuable for blemishes/acne. Raw manuka honey, in particular, possesses strong antibacterial properties that can help alleviate “maskne.” Here is a simple DIY recipe for a mask treatment addressing blemishes, hydration and irritation:
  • 2-3 Tbsp. raw manuka honey
  • ½ tsp. raw apple cider vinegar, lavender hydrosol, or witch hazel
  • 2-3 drops tea tree oil (for antibacterial power) or lavender essential oil (regenerating, antibacterial, soothing)
Combine all ingredients in a glass bowl. Apply a thin layer to damp or dry face. Relax for 10-20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Beets: Seriously Good For You

Beets Seriously Good

Beets: Seriously Good For You

“The beet is the most intense of vegetables. The radish, admittedly, is more feverish, but the fire of the radish is a cold fire, the fire of discontent not of passion. Tomatoes are lusty enough, yet there runs through tomatoes an undercurrent of frivolity. Beets are deadly serious.”
— Tom Robbins
The above quote from Jitterbug Perfume illustrates the importance in which the beet may be held. In this newsletter we will look at this delicious, nutritious red root vegetable and its health-giving benefits. Chief among beets’ medicinal properties are its support of detoxification and nitric oxide production (more about this later). Beets (Beta vulgaris) are a member of the Goosefoot (Chenopodiaceae) family which includes quinoa, Swiss chard and spinach. The intense red-violet color comes from a pigment called betanin. The pigments are strong antioxidant compounds. Nutritionally speaking, beets are an excellent source of fiber, potassium, folate and manganese. What is especially valuable, however, is its content of dietary nitrates, which it shares with its green leafy brethren such as spinach and arugula. Dietary nitrates are metabolized into nitrites by oral bacteria which are subsequently converted to nitric oxide in the body.

What is Nitric Oxide?

Nitric oxide is a gas produced in the body whose primary function is the health of the cardiovascular, immune and nervous systems. It is produced in normal conditions from L-arginine in heart cell types. It has become recognized as being essential for the proper functioning of the cardiovascular system, especially, as decreased production of endothelial nitric oxide is related to the onset and progression of heart disease. Primarily it acts as a vasodilator, relaxing blood vessels to improve blood pressure, prevent thromboses and prevent atherosclerosis.

Nitric Oxide’s Effects

Due to its blood vessel dilation properties, the benefits of nitric oxide are many. This increase in blood flow helps to deliver oxygen and nutrients to body tissues so an overall increase in energy levels may be evident. In recent years beet-based sports pre-workout products have become popular. Studies on athletes have shown drinking beetroot juice can improve exercise performance. Increased blood flow delivers more power for muscles to perform and fuels endurance, energy and stamina. In one study, researchers found that those who supplemented with beet juice had an increase in exercise tolerance and lower “rate of perceived exertion” (subjects felt they weren’t working as hard as others for the same result) than those who did not consume beet juice. Beets for Libido Improved peripheral blood flow improves more than athletic performance. The pharmaceutical drug Viagra’s mechanism is only that of increasing nitric oxide production and thus relaxed blood vessels. The action beets have on nitric oxide production may achieve the same goal, resulting in improvements in erectile dysfunction. Beets have also been shown to benefit blood flow to the brain, thereby improving brain function. A 2017 study by Wake Forest University researchers found that, when combined with exercise, a supplement of beetroot juice “facilitates brain plasticity of somatomotor brain regions as compared with exercise + placebo alone,” especially in older adults.

Detoxification

Beets may support detoxification through multiple mechanisms. Their content of nutrients such as betaine and folate supports the methylation process which is important for Phase II liver detoxification. Phase II neutralizes toxins by conjugating them with other compounds for removal from the body. As well, the phytonutrient betalains present also support Phase II detoxification and are precursors for important detox enzymes. A 2006 study in rats showed that supplementation with beet extract significantly inhibited carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage. Elevated liver enzymes were reduced thereby demonstrating a marked hepato-protective effect of the beets.

Reishi: The Potent Spirit Mushroom

Reishi Potent Spirit Mushroom

Reishi: The Potent Spirit Mushroom

Reishi MushroomTen-thousand-year mushroom, mushroom of spiritual potency, mushroom of immortality. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), reishi is called Ling Zhi which means “spirit plant.” These names conjure images of mist-shrouded Chinese hillsides long ago. The legends surrounding the reishi mushroom span two thousand years or more. Traditionally reishi was used by Taoist monks to improve meditation, promote calmness and attain a long and healthy life. It was also known as the “emperor’s mushroom” and was sought by ancient Chinese royalty for their use exclusively. Throughout Chinese and Japanese culture reishi has become immortalized and represented in paintings, statues and tapestries. The most famous of all Chinese materia medica herbal texts, written between 206 BC-AD 8, lists reishi mushroom as the most respected of the 120 superior tonics. Superior tonics were considered to prolong life, prevent aging, boost qi (vital force) and make the body light and limber. Reishi ConkReishi belongs to the polypore family of mushrooms, containing pores under their caps instead of gills, that grow on the trunks or stumps of trees. Its Latin name, Ganoderma lucidum, translates to “shiny skin” due to the varnished appearance of the conk’s surface. (A conk is a shelf or bracket fungi.) Reishi mushroom is one of the most widely researched of all Asian botanicals. Modern pharmacological studies have identified polysaccharide and triterpene fractions mainly, with amino acids, vitamins and minerals present as well. The main therapeutic activity reported on reishi is centered around these properties:
  • Cardiovascular-regulating
  • Immune-enhancing
  • Hypoglycemic
  • Hepatoprotective

Cardiovascular Properties

Reishi has been shown to possess numerous cardio-protective activities. It inhibits platelet aggregation, reducing “blood cell stickiness” and thus improving thrombi conditions (blood clots). It has significant blood-pressure lowering effects through its action on angiotension-converting enzyme (ACE). Compounds in reishi have been shown to inhibit cholesterol synthesis and absorption as well as reduce triglycerides. In a study of patients with heart disease, a cold-water infusion of reishi was administered to 35 patients. Symptoms (undefined), electrocardiogram (ECG) and primary blood dynamic parameters reportedly improved in 86% of patients. Reishi benefits angina and has been described in ancient Chinese texts as being able to treat “binding in the chest.” Its classic property here is to “nourish the heart.”

Immunomodulatory Effects

Reishi supports immune function through multiple mechanisms. Its polysaccharide beta-glucans contained in cell walls support both innate and adaptive immunity. The body’s first line of defense, innate immunity, is comprised of cells that detect and attack pathogens. Innate immune cells include macrophages and NK cells. Adaptive immunity is a later response to a specific threat such as a particular bacteria or virus. These cell types include B-cells and T-cells. Reishi’s beta-glucans have the ability to activate and stimulate both as well as modulate immune response on the whole. Reishi has been shown to inhibit leukopenia, the decrease in white blood cells that is a side-effect of chemotherapy drugs and, as such, is often used as an adjunct to chemotherapy and radiation therapies. A 1992 study reported that reishi significantly inhibited the growth of leukemia cells. It has been shown to have antiviral properties as well. Generally this mushroom should be used as a tonic, taken on a regular basis to support/protect daily immune health.

Liver Support

Reishi contains novel triterpene compounds, ganoderic acids, which have many biological effects. One compound is an inhibitor of an enzyme closely related to liver dysfunction. Two Chinese clinical studies showed promise in treating chronic hepatitis as well as cirrhosis. Many studies have focused on reishi’s ability to protect the liver from chemical damage and enhance its detoxifying activity. Treatment with reishi protected against carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic damage and indomethacin-induced mouse deaths. Liver cell regeneration was also noted. Part of the hepatoprotective effects are also attributed to the profound antioxidant activity of reishi. It has been shown to scavenge superoxide and hydroxyl free radicals. Triterpenes present have been shown to cause a reduction in liver enzymes. One study comparing the hepatoprotective effects of various plants showed the polysaccharide isolated from reishi was the most effective of the plants studied for raising levels of glutathione in liver cells.

Other Benefits

ReishiReishi has shown pronounced antihistamine action. It is anti-inflammatory. It has been used in Asia to benefit the lungs, helping in conditions such as bronchitis. It assists respiration and is used to assuage high-altitude sickness. Reishi’s beta-glucans benefit the skin and it has been used in Asian skincare for decades to beautify the complexion. It improves energy as well as sleep and in Asia is well-known as an aid for insomnia. Its overall effects may be described as a true adaptogen, restoring homeostasis.  Host Defense Reishi Evergreen carries many reishi products, either singly, combined with other mushrooms or in immune formulas. From revered mushroom company Host Defense comes their Reishi vegan capsule, available in three sizes, as well as a popular and economical powder of this legendary mushroom — perfect for adding to smoothies.
