Mitochondrial Support & Wellness/Longevity

Some of the most talked-about science relating to longevity in the last 15 years has been the study of mitochondia and mitochondrial wellness. If you remember your biology classes at all, you will recall that mitochondria (singular: mitochondrion) are the “powerhouses” or “fuel-furnaces” of the cell. They are the organelles which supply (cellular) energy. The Krebs cycle, or citric acid cycle, is the process by which these furnaces generate energy. The energy molecule, which may be considered the “energy currency” of the cell, is adenosine triphosphate, or ATP for short. It is the end-product of the cellular respiration processes. Every single cell in the body contains these organelles, and the amount in each cell varies according to the individual energy requirements for that cell. Cardiac cells contain thousands of mitochondria, for instance, while some other cells contain merely dozens.

Free Radicals

A largely accepted pathology today for disease states is that of inflammation in the body. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes-related neuropathies, and even Parkinson’s disease seem to all have at their root inflammation and the attendant damage to tissues, whether blood vessels, nerve cells, or the muscular system. In fact, current  medical science points to free-radical damage and low antioxidant status as a prime factor in the evolution of Parkinson’s disease, and that by simply raising that status one may lessen the degenerative symptoms dramatically. Inflammation and free-radical damage also occur at a cellular level, and since the mitochondria power the cell, damage to these little furnaces is inevitable, and affects breakdown and “aging” of the cell and thus tissues and organs. Protection and repair of the mitochondria is possible, science has shown, and the results and ramifications are truly exciting.

Powerhouse Duo

As might be expected, supporting your mitochondria nutritionally is best achieved with a veritable who’s-who of the most powerful antioxidants out there. One of the first studies published for this area was from UC Berkeley professor of molecular and cell biology, Bruce Ames. According to Ames, mitochondria are the “weak link in aging” and that deterioration of them is an important cause of aging. A primary cause of this deterioration is free-radical damage. Ames discovered that with the use of two nutrients, alpha lipoic acid and acetyl l-carnitine, aging mitochondria could be literally rejuvenated. The carnitine metabolite helps shuttle fats into the cell to be burned as energy and the alpha lipoic acid, a compound normally produced by the mitochondria, is a very powerful antioxidant, preventing and repairing the oxidative damage caused by free-radical electrons. The combination of the two, Ames said, made old rats “get up and do the Macarena.” Twenty-eight month-old rats (old) received both nutrients in their food and water and after one month began exhibiting not only outward signs of youth, but performed increasingly better in cognitive tests. They acted more peppy and energetic. Supplementation improved both spatial and temporal memory, and reduced the amount of oxidative damage to RNA in the brain’s hippocampus, an area important in memory. Ames also found that the combination of lipoic acid and acetyl l-carnitine improved mitochondrial activity and thus cellular metabolism, and increased levels of various chemicals known to decline with age, including ascorbic acid, an antioxidant. A conclusion was that of making a 75- to 80-year-old person act middle-aged. NADH & Ribose

Additional Support

Along with this now-classic combination, other nutrients may support mitochondrial health. As mentioned above, the stronger antioxidants come into play here. Many of these compounds support each other, and also support production of other antioxidant compounds. These substances have multiple mechanisms by which they work their magic. Regular readers of these newsletters will know about glutathione‘s importance for health and longevity. N-acetyl-cysteine, only partly by virtue of being a glutathione precursor, is a profound cellular protector. Resveratrol has been shown to induce mitochondrial biogenesis. This increase in mitochondrial content also may reduce ROS (reactive oxygen species) in the cells, further extending cellular lifespan. The famous antioxidant Coenzyme Q10, legendary for its role in creating cellular energy via the Krebs cycle, assists mitochondrial function at the most basic level. Two other nutrients which support total mitochondrial health via their cellular energy support are D-Ribose and NADH (Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). Both of these compounds are part of ATP production and cycle in the cell, and thus profoundly help preserve mitochondrial function. Conditions with particular benefit here will include fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and especially congestive heart failureOmega-3 fatty acids, important for so many bodily systems, do support cellular health as well. These fats help to maintain fluidity/permeability of cellular membranes, allowing for passage of nutrients and wastes in and out of the cell.

Lifestyle Support

In addition to certain nutrients, there are lifestyle measures one may implement which may help mitochondrial wellness. Exercise, in particular interval and strength training, has been shown to increase mitochondrial function. Naturally, a healthy diet will assist as well. This translates to avoidance of processed foods, fried foods, and especially white sugar, which creates stiff, inflexible tissues and inflammation. Lots of fruits and vegetables of a rainbow palette indicating antioxidant compounds such as anthocyaninslutein, and other carotenoids, will further help your cells. “You are what you eat” never gets old!

Availability & Selection

Evergreen Nutrition carries all of the nutrients/supplements mentioned above. Most of these are located in our Antioxidant section, and can be found singly or in formulas. An especially powerful formula is Top 10 Healers from Source Naturals. It packs ten of the most well-researched and critical antioxidant nutrients at a very reasonable price.

Major Minerals: Seven Things You Can’t Live Without

The earth has an abundance of minerals. However, people don’t eat dirt, so we must get our minerals elsewhere. Plants, or the animals that eat them, take minerals from the earth and transform them into forms that can be utilized by human bodies to help maintain the intricate functions that sustain life. Nutritionally speaking, there are two groups of minerals: major minerals (macrominerals) and trace minerals (microminerals). They are so-named because of the daily requirements: more than 100 mg for macrominerals and less than 100 mg for microminerals. Note that trace minerals can also refer to the dozens of other minerals, like vanadium and germanium, that we need in extremely minute amounts (generally less than 1-10 parts per million).

Electrolytes: The Body Electric

Of the seven major minerals — calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride and sulfur — all but sulfur function as electrolytes. Electrolytes conduct electricity when dissolved in water or bodily fluids. These ions help maintain the delicate balance of vital fluids within and between our cells and to control pH, blood chemistry, muscle and nerve function, and much more. Although sulfur is not an electrolyte, it also plays an important role in keeping us alive and well.

Alive Plant Sourced CalciumCalcium

Most people are familiar with the essential role calcium plays in bone health, but it has many other functions. Calcium is involved in kidney, muscle and nerve function and its cardiovascular benefits are many. For example, it helps maintain normal heart rhythm and may protect against stroke. A dose of 2,200 mg daily can lower total serum cholesterol, increase HDL (good) and lower LDL (bad) cholesterols. Calcium imbalance contributes to hypertension, but 500-1,500 mg a day can lower elevated blood pressure. In addition, calcium improves the permeability of cell membranes and facilitates apoptosis (normal cell death) which cancer cells do not experience. Calcium also has digestive benefits (for constipation, gastric ulcer and heartburn) and it helps regulate electrolyte balance. Calcium deficiency can cause hyperhidrosis (excessive perspiration) leading to further depletion of this important mineral via sweat. (For more information on calcium see our newsletters.) Dietary sources of calcium include dairy, fish (with bones), seafood, broccoli and green leafy veggies. Best forms include plant-sourced calcium, calcium bisglycinate, malate, citrate, lactate and orotate. Calcium carbonate requires hydrochloric acid for absorption.

Magnesium

According to the American Osteopathic Association, up to half of Americans do not get enough magnesium. Since this mineral helps activate Vitamin D which aids calcium absorption, half of us may be lacking in those nutrients as well. Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic processes and is necessary for synthesis of DNA, RNA and glutathione, an important detoxifying antioxidant. Magnesium is also important for cardiovascular heath, relaxing blood vessels and lowering blood pressure. It allows muscles to relax and is useful for treating menstrual cramps, spasms and tremors. Magnesium malate, in particular, can decrease muscle pain associated with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. Continued low magnesium levels can lead to depression and migraines for which magnesium L-threonate may be most useful since it is the only form that crosses the blood-brain barrier. (For more information on magnesium see our newsletter.) Dietary sources of magnesium include dairy, fish, meat, legumes and whole grains. In addition, magnesium can be absorbed via the skin as with magnesium oil or epsom salt soaks. Best forms include glycinate, malate, lactate, citrate and aspartate. Magnesium oxide is not well absorbed, but can be useful as a laxative.

Phosphorus

Although we use most (80% to 90%) of our phosphorus for maintaining teeth and bones, it has many other important functions. For example, phosphorus combines with fat to make our phospholipid membranes — the permeable barrier that controls the transport of substances into and out of our cells. In addition, phosphorous is involved in muscle and nerve function, synthesis of DNA and RNA as well as energy production. It also combines with oxygen to make the electrolyte phosphate and, like many major minerals, phosphorous helps maintain pH levels — the balance of acidity and alkalinity in our various tissues. Phosphorous is abundant in most diets, in fact excessive phosphorus is more common. Those who consume soft drinks may be getting way too much.

Potassium & Sodium

Potassium and sodium are necessary for the balance between intracellular and extracellular fluids. Fluid exchange across cell membranes brings nourishment into and removes waste from our cells. The potassium-sodium exchange also allows our nerve cells to communicate via the transmission of electrical impulses. Both of these major minerals are necessary for normal functioning of muscles (including the heart) and the nervous system as well as maintaining healthy blood pressure. Although potassium is a necessary nutrient, most supplements have no more than 99 mg (2% of the daily value) because it is so abundant in food. Potassium helps to maintain a proper balance between potassium and sodium, but too much potassium can cause muscle weakness and irregular heartbeat or even heart failure. Excess sodium negatively impacts kidney function which is detrimental to cardiovascular function. Dietary sources of potassium include dairy (but not cheese), legumes, vegetables and fruits such as apricots, avocados and bananas. Sodium can be found in virtually all foods, but sea salt is a good source. Best form: potassium citrate.

Chloride

Chloride is necessary to maintain the pH of bodily fluids, for fluid balance both inside and outside of cells and to maintain proper blood pressure and volume. High fever, diarrhea, vomiting or sweating can cause dehydration resulting in low levels of chloride (and other electrolytes) so it is crucial to take electrolytes when dehydrated. Hydrochloric acid (HCl), which is necessary for digestive function, is made from hydrogen and chloride. Seaweed, salt, olives and vegetables such as celery are natural sources of chloride.

Sulfur

Sulfur is present in all living tissues and is abundant in skin, muscle, bone and connective tissues. It is involved in enzyme reactions and protein synthesis and is part of several amino acids, including methionine and cysteine, as well as MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). Sulfur, as a component of glutathione, protects our cells from free-radical damage and plays an important role in the liver’s detoxification processes. (For more information on sulfur see our newsletter.) Dietary sources of sulfur include eggs, garlic, onions and cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Best form: MSM, a non-toxic, physiologically active form of sulfur. Because minerals serve so many important functions in our bodies, it is important to get them in adequate amounts. Eating a varied, whole-food diet rich in vegetables is a good start. However, the mineral content of food depends on the minerals in the soil in which the food is grown or where the animals graze. So consider focusing on eating organic food since organic farming returns nutrients, including minerals, to the soil. DISCLAIMER: If you have a medical condition or are taking prescription drugs, consult your doctor before taking mineral supplements.

Healthy Bones: Strong & Flexible

Our bones are in a constant state of remodeling: tearing down and building up from infancy until the end of our days. It takes a variety of minerals and other nutrients to create an entirely new skeleton every seven years. This month we are featuring three excellent bone-building formulas which are on sale for 30% OFF throughout August. GARDEN OF LIFE’S RAW CALCIUM and NEW CHAPTER’S BONE STRENGTH use clinically proven marine algae to provide the raw materials of bone remodeling. Both contain magnesium, strontium, silica, vanadium and over 70 trace minerals essential not only for bones, but for cardiovascular, nerve, muscle and eye health and more. JARROW’S BONE-UP utilizes microcrystalline hydroxyapatite (MCHA), free-range Australian/New Zealand calf bone, which includes all the minerals necessary to build strong bones. All three of these products feature vitamin K2 in the superior MK-7 form which directs calcium out of soft tissue and into the bone matrix. Too much calcium may harden soft tissues like arteries, eyes and kidneys leading to health risks so MK-7 is vitally important. In addition to being strong, bones must also be flexible so these formulas also contain vitamin C and/or silica to enhance collagen formation. Plant-derived nutrients offer superior absorption and minerals from bone are also well-utilized by our bodies. Additionally, plants and bones contain a naturally balanced complex of minerals which, in conjunction with vitamins D and K and physical activity, help to ensure that our bones will remain strong and flexible. Can’t swallow “horse pills”? No problem! BONE STRENGTH also comes in TINY TAB size.

Nutrition For Heart Health

Fat is bad for heart health. Fat is good for heart health. Vitamin E is good for heart health. Vitamin E is bad for heart health. It is difficult at times to keep up with the rapidly changing information and facts regarding which vitamins, minerals and herbs are beneficial to cardiovascular health. It is comforting then, to know there are a few nutrients with such a long history of safe use or absolutely unimpeachable facts that no one may cast doubt upon their heart benefits. Two of the unassailable superstars of heart health are the mineral magnesium and the vitamin-like substance Coenzyme Q10. Mighty Magnesium Not only is this mineral necessary for more than 300 biochemical processes in the body, but to be blunt, magnesium deficiency causes cardiovascular damage and cardiac arrhythmia. Arrhythmia may lead to heart attack. It has been found that individuals who die suddenly of heart attack have far lower levels of magnesium than control groups. Magnesium helps to dilate arteries and lessen the burden of the heart to pump blood, thereby preventing arrythmias, and also helping to reduce high blood pressure. One study showed that out of 61 men studied, those who consumed the most magnesium-rich diet had consistently lower blood pressure. Magnesium may also prevent calcification of blood vessels, establish healthy cholesterol ratios and inhibit platelet aggregation (stickiness of blood cells). This mineral may also improve energy production within the heart as well as decrease the heart damage high stress inflicts. Supplementation of magnesium is highly advised, as soils may be depleted as well as drinking water. Alcohol, stress, (fear, anxiety), crowding, and even heavy exercise with its increases in adrenalin flow all decrease magnesium levels in the body. An estimated 60% of menopausal women are magnesium-deficient. Advisable daily dosages are from 350-500 mg. Powders are quite popular right now, and there are liquids, tablets and capsules as well. The Energy Coenzyme Coenzyme Q10 has been clinically studied worldwide for decades with relation to cardiovascular function and health. This fat-soluble quinone is an essential component of mitochondrial membranes and plays a direct role in energy production in the cell. Since the heart never rests from its workload, this organ requires a huge amount of energy/fuel/support. The highest levels of CoQ10 in the body are found in the heart muscle for this reason, and it has been shown that deficiencies of this nutrient are common in cardiac patients. Myocardial (heart muscle) biopsies in patients with various cardiac diseases showed deficiency in 50-75% of cases. There have been more than 100 clinical studies at major universities and hospitals documenting the cardiovascular benefits of CoQ10. It essentially improves the heart’s ability to pump more effectively. It has demonstrated ability to improve congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy and angina and to reduce high blood pressure. Research shows it offsets the toxic side-effects of statin drugs used for cholesterol control, since these drugs inhibit CoQ10 synthesis in the body and thus potentially damage the heart. Part of this nutrient’s effect also comes from its function as a powerful antioxidant, and there are many applications for conditions other than cardiovascular protection. Supplementation is remarkably safe and dosages vary from 30 mg to 200 mg or more depending upon condition. It is advisable to find a product which is in a softgel containing an oil base as this is a fat-soluble nutrient and absorption will be enhanced.

Fast Food!?!

Evergreen Nutrition recommends a Fast Food diet! No, it’s not a cold day in the underworld, it’s freeze-dried fruits, veggies and herbs from Eclectic Institute in Sandy, Oregon. Do You Believe in Angels?

We believe in angels! The Vitamin Angel Alliance, Inc., a non-profit, non-governmental organization, works to reduce global malnutrition by providing nutritional supplements to children in underserved communities worldwide. They have helped 52 million children in 66 countries including the United States. Vitamin Angels World Map Nearly half (45%) of all deaths of children under 5 years old are linked to malnutrition — over 3 million children every year. Furthermore, over 160 million children are so undernourished that their growth is stunted, putting them at a greater risk of dying from infections. Malnutrition in very young children can also impair cognitive function. In the United States alone, 13 million children go hungry. Vitamin Angels believes that providing multivitamins to fill nutritional gaps is a way to reduce global malnutrition. They also treat children with albendazole, (an anti-parasitic drug that can treat infections caused by tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms and pinworms) because these parasites can cause pain and illness and interfere with nutrient absorption. Additionally, Vitamin Angels helps to ensure future good health by offering prenatal vitamins, as well as nutritional counseling, to women while pregnant and breastfeeding. These earth angels also provide Vitamin A supplements to strengthen the immune systems of children who don’t have access to foods containing Vitamin A. Just two doses a year is all it takes to fight Vitamin A deficiency which can lead to illness, blindness and even death. Vitamin Angels offers a better and simpler solution than the genetically-modified “golden rice” alternative.

Curcumin News

The plant turmeric has been used as food and medicine for thousands of years. It is also one of the most researched herbs (or spices, if you will) on earth. Much of this research has focused on the primary anti-inflammatory compound found in the plant, curcumin. Crude turmeric is only about 5 percent curcumin by weight, so most turmeric supplements are concentrated or “standardized” to contain 95% curcumin, this being the phytochemical generally considered to confer the greatest benefits. And the benefits do go on and on, as the fact that it is one of the best-selling single herbal supplements available today proves. The reason for this success is quite simple: it works. Most people take curcumin for its most popular attribute, reduction in inflammation, especially arthritis. The science here is irrefutable. The compound blocks an inflammatory enzyme abbreviated COX. People do notice relief from pain. The king of herbs has many other benefits as well, however, some of which we will explore.

Brain Health

Research has continually shown that curcumin exerts mutiple actions and many of these are directly related to reducing inflammation or simply maintaining homeostasis with regard to inflammatory processes. One area of recent interest is its proven ability to reduce and prevent elevated levels of beta-amyloid plaque accumulation in the brain, the marker for Alzheimer’s disease. It is interesting to note that India has one of the lowest rates of Alzheimer’s disease in the world, and consumption of turmeric daily is the standard for millions of Indians. Curcumin’s brain-protective qualities do not end here. It has been shown to protect brain cells from deterioration in addition to stimulating the growth of new neurons, especially in the hippocampus, the “seat of memory.” Another aspect of curcumin is its ability to increase levels of mood-boosting neurotransmitters serotonin, tryptophan and dopamine, thereby helping to relieve depression. In fact, curcumin has been termed as effective as pharmaceutical anti-depressant drugs.

Anticancer Activity

Curcumin’s profound antioxidant activity protects the body from oxidative stress. It is extremely liver-protective, helping that organ to detoxify harmful substances. Coupled with the anti-inflammatory activities it exerts, curcumin has been shown to block carcinogenic substances from causing cellular damage that ultimately results in cancer. A 2003 article published in the journal Anticancer Research said: “Extensive research over the last 50 years has indicated it can prevent and treat cancer…. Curcumin can suppress tumor initiation, promotion and metastasis.” Curcumin has been also shown to increase the activity of cancer drugs, and may protect normal cells from the toxic effects of chemotherapy drugs and radiation treatments.

Cardiovascular Health

Researchers have found that curcumin performs as well as the statin class of cholesterol lowering drugs. In multiple studies it lowered triglycerides and also raised heart-protective HDL, both of which contribute to reduced heart attack/disease risk. In one study, healthy humans were given 500 mg of curcumin daily for seven days. They experienced a 33% decrease in blood lipid peroxides, and a 29% decrease in serum cholesterol levels. The study’s authors concluded that curcumin could lower the risk of heart disease. Here again, curcumin’s powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects contribute to this protection. Cholesterol itself does not clog arteries. It is the oxidized cholesterol which becomes the problem in heart disease. The oxidized cholesterol may form the plaque which clogs arteries, restricting blood flow and possibly breaking off to cause heart attacks and strokes. Curcumin is able to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the first place, thereby protecting the arteries from damage and risk.

Other Benefits

Curcumin has been shown to be highly liver protective in many studies. One animal study feeding rats a diet simulating high alcohol consumption showed that the rats given curcumin concurrently showed none of the signs of liver damage associated with alcoholism. It also appears to increase bile secretion, thereby improving liver function and helping in the digestion of fats. Studies in India showed that curcumin may lower blood sugar as well as increase and improve utilization of blood insulin. Through its properties curcumin may also protect against diabetes-related issues such as neuropathy and ocular conditions. Curcumin has been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation (blood cell stickiness) as effectively as aspirin, without the unwanted negative gastrointestinal side-effects of aspirin. Curcumin possesses wound-healing properties through multiple mechanisms. It protects collagen and blood vessels and improves their deposition and density in wounds, both important for healing. These properties may be particularly beneficial for diabetes patients who have related slow-healing ulcers and wounds. Topical application of turmeric has been shown to improve psoriasis, eczema, and even skin cancers. In addition, its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties benefit skin appearance and beauty. In the Indian tradition, turmeric pastes applied to the skin are a staple of a bride’s preparations for her wedding. The recipes often include other Indian herbs such as sandalwood and amla, and flours from chickpeas and other pulses. Evergreen Nutrition carries literally dozens of turmeric and curcumin products, both singly and in formulas. It can be a bit confusing for our customers to see the large array of products and wonder how to choose one. There are many different potencies, methods of extraction, and even added ingredients, for example, which may create questions. Each staff member is well-versed in the turmeric/curcumin selection and would be happy to help you pick a product which suits your needs and your pocketbook. As we carry such a large selection, at any given time at least several companies are on sale or special.

Take The 14-Day Digest Challenge

For people with indigestion, heartburn, gas and/or bloating, the upcoming holidays of feasting and merriment present a digestive challenge indeed. That’s why ENZYMEDICA, the Enzyme Experts, is presenting another kind of challenge: improve your digestion in just 14 days with DIGEST BASIC enzymes. Metabolic enzymes are proteins produced by our cells to initiate or accelerate virtually all biochemical reactions necessary for life, including digestion. Fresh foods contain enzymes but they are destroyed by heat. Fortunately you can give your body some extra support in the form of digestive enzymes. Enzymedica uses a variety of plant-based enzymes that assist our natural digestive processes in the acidic stomach environment and also in the alkaline small intestine where most nutrient absorption occurs. Their exclusive “TheraBlend” formulas contain several kinds of each of the four main digestive enzymes: protease to split proteins into peptides and amino acids, lipase to convert fats into smaller fatty acids, amylase to change starch into sugars, and cellulase to break down plant fiber. Since enzymes are very specific about the kind of molecule they react with, as well as the temperature and pH of that reaction, TheraBlending provides enhanced activity across a broad pH spectrum (from 2 to 12 on a scale of 1 to 14) so these enzymes work longer and harder to support optimum digestion, absorption, and elimination. Additionally, Enzymedica uses only the highest quality food-grown plant enzymes. All of their products are 100% vegan and free of common allergens. They never use fillers so the capsules are small and easy to swallow. It’s easy to take the 14-DAY DIGEST CHALLENGE. Simply take 1 or more Digest Basic capsules with each meal or large snack for two weeks and see if you experience less digestive distress, improved regularity, and increased energy. Not only does Enzymedica back up this challenge with a money-back guarantee, but they have made it very attractive by offering more for less. You get 33% MORE product. And, as always, CLUB MEMBERS get an ADDITIONAL DISCOUNT even on sale items. So it’s a great time to improve your digestion by taking the Digest Challenge! Sucontral® D: Clinically Validated Blood Sugar Support*†

Sucontral® D: Clinically Validated Blood Sugar Support*†.

by Terry Lemerond, Founder and President of EuroPharma, Inc. If you find that maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is an important personal goal, consider adding Sucontral® D to your daily regimen. Sucontral D features a clinically studied extract of Hintonia latiflora, an herb that you may not have heard about before, but you’ll be glad that you did now. Hintonia FlowerThe irony is that while this botanical has over 60 years of research and use behind it in Europe, it originates in the Western hemisphere in the Sonoran desert in Mexico. This shrub-like tree has white, trumpet-shaped fragrant flowers and withstands a very harsh climate. This resilience actually helps create and concentrate the powerful compounds that have made it so highly regarded. Although Hintonia has a history of traditional use, research has focused on how and why the bark extract benefits the body. It has been found that these extracts contain a polyphenol called coutareagenin, which helps support healthy blood sugar levels.*† This compound appears to modulate alpha-glucosidase, an enzyme that releases sugar from carbohydrates, allowing people to experience even-keel blood sugar levels throughout the day, versus the “spiking” that we can all relate to that can affect energy and mood. Sucontral D contains a standardized amount of this unique polyphenol for consistent results. Sucontral D Supplement Facts While most of the original research focused on the qualities and compounds in the plant only, scientists have included synergistic vitamins and trace minerals (vitamins B1, B6, B12, folic acid, chromium, zinc, and vitamins C and E) blended with the extract for even greater benefits. It is that combination that scientists in Germany created Sucontral® D – a pairing of time-honored wisdom and leading-edge science. It is this clinically studied supplement that offers astounding support of blood sugar balance.*† In one study, adult participants were provided with Sucontral D for six months. At the end of the study, in every crucial measure, Sucontral D significantly and dramatically supported quality of life measures associated with healthy blood sugar balance*†. It also supported healthy cholesterol and triglyceride balance – both important, and often related – factors to healthy insulin function.*† Sucontral D Other clinical research has found similar results, with the overall conclusion showing that Sucontral D supports healthy insulin function, carbohydrate metabolism, healthy A1C levels, and healthy blood sugar levels throughout the day.*† Now, more than ever, supporting healthy blood sugar levels is a critical part of optimal health.*† It may be one of your own personal goals as well. Sucontral D can help. *THESE STATEMENTS HAVE NOT BEEN EVALUATED BY THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION. THIS PRODUCT IS NOT INTENDED TO DIAGNOSE, TREAT, CURE OR PREVENT DISEASE. † Supports healthy levels already within normal range.

Fuel Your Thyroid from the Inside Out

Your thyroid is a tiny, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck. Though small in size, it has a big bearing on your overall wellness. The thyroid is fueled by important nutrients obtained through foods you eat, and its job consists of producing and releasing hormones called triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) into the bloodstream. T3 and T4 regulate everything from heart rate to body weight to healthy cholesterol levels. Vital to thyroid health is iodine—one of nature’s most amazing minerals. Your thyroid needs it every day, yet most people don’t get enough. That’s because iodine is a trace element, meaning it’s present in small amounts in the environment, and nearly impossible to obtain through the Standard American Diet. In fact, iodine levels in the United States population have gone down 50 percent in the last 30 years. Other nutrients are also known to support healthy thyroid function. Two of the most beneficial are selenium and L-tyrosine. Because it can be so difficult to obtain these crucial nutrients in your daily diet, it’s extremely beneficial to take them in supplement form. Three Must-Have Nutrients How well your thyroid functions depends on many factors: age, the environment, and your family history, just to name a few. If you’re looking for the ultimate in thyroid support, Thyroid Care™ Plus can make a dramatic difference. It provides rejuvenating ingredients that help the thyroid create hormones for optimal health.* Thyroid Care Plus features the nutrients the thyroid needs to support daily energy, healthy metabolism, lustrous hair, hormone balance, healthy weight management†, and immune health.* It contains iodine, L-tyrosine, and selenium. The iodine is in three forms: Potassium iodide, sodium iodide, and molecular iodine. These three types of iodine support thyroid hormone synthesis in the body, which in turn supports overall health.* L-tyrosine is an amino acid that’s required to create the thyroid hormone thyroxine, which supports mental well-being and daily energy.* Lastly, the product contains selenium. This key mineral supports the conversion of T4 into the active thyroid hormone, T3. It works synergistically with the iodine and L-tyrosine to protect the thyroid from the risk of oxidative stress and damage. Selenium is truly what makes Thyroid Care Plus different—it’s a mineral most abundantly found in the thyroid, and a critical ingredient for proper thyroid function.* For a big impact on your overall health, including thyroid function, you can also supplement with iodine on its own. Tri-Iodine® provides a wide spectrum of health benefits including hormone balance, immune support, and breast, uterine, prostate, colon, and cellular health. This unique iodine formula also supports detoxification of common environmental stressors, plus cellular defense throughout the body.*^
