The amino acid L-glutamine is the most abundant free-form amino acid in the body, especially the muscles, and is necessary for building and maintaining skeletal muscles making it useful for body builders as well as those on weight-loss diets. It is also helpful for people suffering from muscle wasting due to prolonged bed rest and diseases like cancer and AIDS. Also, when the body is under great stress, including injury and surgical trauma, glutamine is released from the muscles into the blood and may contribute to loss of skeletal muscle.
L-glutamine is necessary for many metabolic processes including the production of glycogen and immne support during times of stress. It is important for digestive tract maintenance where it fuels enterocytes (intestinal cells) and is very helpful for gut disorders like peptic ulcers and is especially indicated for repairing damage of the intestinal villi due to celiac disease since it enhances the growth of tissues in the jejunum, the part of the digestive tract where most absorption of nutrients occurs.
L-glutamine is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and is converted to glutamic acid which fuels the brain cells and is essential for cerebral function. It increases GABA, a neurotransmitter that promotes healthy brain function and mental ability.
