5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a neurotransmitter regulates the sleep cycle and initiates sleep. It is made in our bodies from tryptophan as a precursor to serotonin and melatonin production. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that promotes mental well-being and is involved in sleep, appetite, learning and memory.

5-HTP is more consistent than tryptophan in promoting and maintaining sleep, even at lower doses, and it improves the quality of sleep by increasing REM and deep sleep (stages 3 and 4) without lengthening total sleep time.
