Clinically-Documented Eye Support
Lutein is a fat-soluble carotenoid that produces a yellowish pigment in marigolds and other plants. Lutein, and its isomer zeaxanthin, are found in high concentrations in the macula of the retina and in the lens of the eye. The combination of lutein and zeaxanthin helps protect the eyes from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a major cause of vision impairment in people over 65. Studies show that older people who have high carotenoid intake have the lowest rate of AMD and when taken at the onset of AMD visual function was improved. Lutein and zeaxanthin also help protect against cataract formation. Additionally, lutein is deposited in the retina to help protect the eyes from damaging UV rays and blue light.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with the natural killer cells of our immune system and are also useful for allergic rhinitis in adults. These antioxidants are also found in brain, breast and cervical tissues as well as the skin where they offer protection from redness and swelling due to sunburn.
Most Americans do not get sufficient lutein from diet alone, so supplementation is important. However, lutein and zeaxanthin are not converted to Vitamin A within our bodies like other carotenoids, so should not be used alone for Vitamin A deficiency.
Jarrow Formulas Lutein is extracted from marigold petals. Each softgel contains 20 mg lutein (net yield) from lutein esters, which are naturally occurring, more stable and are well absorbed.
