The Amazing Antiviral Health Benefits of Red Marine Algae
The Amazing Antiviral Health Benefits of Red Marine Algae
Unfortunately, humans (as well as animals) are natural hosts for viruses and other pathogens. In this newsletter we will take a look at the demonstrated antiviral benefits and effects of the red marine algae (RMA) species.
There are over 7,000 species of red algae in the phylum Rhodophyta. Most of them are marine algae with a small portion being fresh-water species. Published research dating back decades has shown several species to have pronounced antiviral as well as anti-tumor activities. In particular, the Gigartinaceae and Dumontiaceae strains have garnered scientific interest for their amazing immune supporting properties.
Compounds Present in Red Marine Algae
Unique protein-bound carbohydrates known as sulfated polysaccharides seem to be responsible for the major antiviral activity of red marine algae. Also present in red marine algae are phytosterols and sterolins which may have their own benefits to offer. The mechanisms for the antiviral activity of RMA include blockage of viral binding sites on cell membranes (by forming a shield around the cell membrane preventing pathogens from entering) and inhibition of the enzymes required for viruses to infect their host (that’s us).
Antiviral Activity of Red Marine Algae
The unique polysaccharides present in red marine algae have demonstrated suppression of herpes viruses including HSV-1 (oral), HSV-2 (genital), HSV-6, as well as the related cytomegalovirus and the viruses that cause chicken pox and shingles. In addition, Gigartina extracts were also shown to be effective against the two Herpes strains that were reported to be resistant to the antiviral drug acyclovir.
Red Marine Algae Supplements
Red marine algae is available in supplement form as well as a topical ointment. Pure Planet offers Red Marine Algae Plus, a combination of both Gigartina and Dumontiaceae algaes with the addition of phycocyanin-rich Spirulina, a fresh-water blue-green algae shown to benefit the immune system as well. Red Marine Algae Plus is vegan, gluten free and non-GMO as well. It is available in a 90-count bottle as well as a convenient travel size of 24 capsules. In Pure Planet’s words, “Many grateful customers and chronic virus sufferers report that Red Marine Algae Plus has changed their lives and have permanently switched to using it over L-lysine and over-the-counter topical creams.”
From Vibrant Health comes Gigartina Red Marine Algae, a single-source algae product shown to provide a very rich source of antiviral sulfated polysaccharides. According to the company, the strain Gigartina is the strongest source of sulfated polysaccharides they have found. Research indicates that Gigartina is effective against these viruses: influenza, dengue, Herpes simplex-1 and -2, human papillomavirus, human rhinovirus, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This product is also vegan, gluten free and non-GMO.
Gigartina RMA Ointment
Also available from Vibrant Health is a topical ointment product. Gigartina RMA Ointment is a soothing, healing, antiviral, antibacterial ointment containing two demonstrated antiviral compounds, Gigartina red marine algae and lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) plus 13 other ingredients. According to Vibrant Health, the rapid, penetrating action of all natural emu oil* carries the antiviral and healing power of this unique formula deep into the skin to promote relief and recovery. It may be useful against: cold sores and chicken pox, as well as non-viral conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, diaper rash, acne, surface scarring, bruises, insect bites, and a broad range of skin lesions. Vibrant Health reports that results have been quite good with shingles as well. This product comes in a one-quarter ounce jar and the company stresses that a little goes a long way!
*Emu oil comes from birds, so this is not a vegan product.
